Posted by Doug Eichstaedt on Aug 04 2014 at 05:00PM PDT in Lyons House League

Boys and girls are welcome to join the Lyons Aquatics Water Polo team. Water Polo takes the endurance of swimming and mixes it with the skills of soccer and basketball. The age groups are determined by their birth date as of the day of the tournament. The players are placed into the following age groups:

18 and under boys or girls

16 and under boys or girls

14 and under boys or girls

    12 and under coed

    10 and under coed

Lyons offers practices year round and games during the fall and summer seasons.  Each season will focus on developing individual and team skills. Some of the basic skills covered are ball handling, passing, shooting, and defensive/offensive positioning.  Practices will develop to cover more advanced skills such as defensive tactics, offensive sets, 6 on 5, and counterattack.

INTRODUCTION TO WATER POLO

Lyons House League (co-ed ages 8-12)

The House League is an opportunity for players of all abilities to get in the water, have fun and compete against their peers.  Children will be introduced to the basic skills of water polo in a fun and encouraging environment.  Players will be divided evenly onto 10u or 12u teams that they will play/train with for the entire season.  All players will get equal playing time.

Fall Season

Practice will be Sunday from 9 am-10 am.  Every 5th Sunday will be dedicated to competing against the other in-house league teams.  No previous water polo experience required.

Winter Season (eight weeks in January and February)

Practice will be Sunday from 10-11 am.  The 4th and 8th practice will be 10-11:30 am and include a scrimmage.

COMPETITIVE TEAMS

14 and under Boys and Girls & 12 and under Coed

The spring season begins the first week in April and finishes in May.  The season focuses on skill development and gaining an understanding of the game. There is also a focus on advanced individual skills and team strategies.

The summer season will be dedicated to our 14u boys and girls travel teams for Junior Olympics.  Please check out the Junior Olympics page for more information.  There are several other opportunities in the area to play water polo.  There is a summer camp through LTHS for players in grades 3-5 as well as 6-8.   This will be a great introduction to the sport for our area athletes.  Many of the summer pools also offer water polo camps.

The fall season begins the week after Labor Day and concludes in early November.  The fall season offers many opportunities our teams to compete against other area teams on the weekends. The games will be held on either a Saturday or Sunday at area pools (including LTHS).   The season concludes with the teams competing in the Illinois Age Group Championships.

The winter season begins in early November and ends the third week of February.  All players are welcome to participate and learn the game for the first time or continue to develop their skills.  The winter season practices continue to build upon the basic skills of water polo and work towards more advanced tactics.  The winter season also offers many opportunities for our teams to compete against other area teams on the weekends. The games will be held on either a Saturday or Sunday at area pools (including LTHS).

18 and under Boys and Girls & 16 and under Boys and Girls teams

We also offer an 18 and under and 16 and under boys and girls programs during the fall/winter season.  The season begins the first week of September and finishes the third week of February.  There will be opportunities to compete in both the fall for the boys and winter for the girls.

The summer season begins the last week of May and concludes the last week of July.  Our teams compete in the Illinois Summer League as well as participate in weekend tournaments.  The concluding competition is the National Junior Olympics.
