SPRING 2016 DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIPS

(At St. Louis Cardinals' Quadriplex, Jupiter) 

LOS TIGRES AND BEACH BUMS CAPTURE SPRING 2016 CHAMPIONSHIPS 

Tigres 9 Blades 4 

     Luis De La Cruz, who spent eight years as a pro, mostly with the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization, rose to the occasion in the American Division championship, slugging four hits, including a double,  and knocking in four runs to lead the top seeded and regular season champion Tigres to another title.  De La Cruz was selected as the championship game Most Valuable Player. 

     Osvaldo Pedroso had a double, single and an RBI.  Six Tigres had one hit.  Luis Mejia (2 RBIs), Melvin  Bruno (2 RBIs), Miguel Fernandez, Nicxk Adames, Danny Laperna all contributed singles, and Steven Ramirez, whose pinch hit single started the four run insurance runs rally in the bottom of the 8th. 

     The third seeded Blades stayed in the game right to the end, trailing by only a 5-3 score until the Tigres scored four times with two outs in the 8th inning on some porous defense with allowed four unearned runs.  The Blades got one back in the ninth, but it was too little, too late. 

     William Ramos and Lazaro Guarde kept the Blades’ hopes alive as both hit a double and single, with one run batted in for each.  Skipper Yordany Martinez, Eduardo Del Toro and Yulien Escalona had one hit apiece. Ramos went eight innings and took the loss, but probably deserved a better fate as only two of the nine Tigres’ runs were earned.

     The Tigres trounced the Athletics 12-4 in the American Division semifinal. 

    The Blades also had an easy time in the semifinals, doubling up on the number two seeded Bandits 12-6. 

Beach Bums 4 Diamondbacks 3     

     The Beach Bums spotted the Diamondbacks a run in the first inning, took a 4-1 lead to the 9th inning, and held on to win the National Division championship at the St. Louis Cardinals’ minor league complex in Jupiter.  

     It was the Beach Bums’ third Palm Beach League title, and sixth overall, including three in Broward County. Jason Bryan had a double and single, and was hit by a pitch. RJ Neal had two singles and a run batted in, and Steve Skeen each had two hits to top the Bums’ 12 hit offense, but the Diamondbacks made it a close finish with a two run 9th inning.

     The championship is the second in a row for the Beach Bums, who won the Fall 2015-16 AAA championship in February of 2016. The Beach Bums posted two runs in the second, and single runs in the fourth and 8th, before the Diamondbacks got two in the 9th. In addition to his double and single, Bryan was hit by a pitch, winding up two for two and earning the game’s MVP award. Bernie Diaz had a hit and drove in two of the four runs. Austin Steiger had a hit and one RBI, Jesus Delgado, manager Dave Salley, Curt Rapp and Daniel McNutt had a hit each.

     For the Dbacks, Mike Roy and Reymar Cabrera had two hits apiece. Andrew Attaway had a hit and an RBI. Robbie Pettet, Keith Buck and Trent Bellamy each had a single. Salley, normally a closer, started for the Bums and gave up a run in the first before giving way to Noel Cañete, who pitched shutout ball for three innings to get the win. He allowed four hits and fanned three. Rick Schnur pitched the last five, and gave up two runs and two hits in the final inning. Schnur struck out four and earned a save. Donnie Teachman went the route for the Diamondbacks and took the loss.
