Chatfield Club Wrestling

Spring Session

The winter season ends for most clubs at the end of February or beginning in March.  Many wrestlers and coaches transition into other sports for the spring and summer seasons which leaves wrestlers that would like to continue to refine and learn without many options.   While it is important for younger athletes to participate in other sports, it is also important for wrestlers to continue to accumulate mat time to excel in the sport of wrestling.  This spring Chatfield Jr Wrestling would like to invite all 8 year olds and above, including High School aged wrestlers to our spring wrestling season. The spring season will focus on all 3 styles of wrestling, for those new to freestyle or Greco, these skills will enhance your wrestlers understanding of positioning and scoring while they work to perfect the techniques they already use.

Chatfield Wrestling Academy

Chatfield Wrestling Club is excited to be working with Jeffco Public Schools & Colorado Department of Education to create a first of its kind Jeffco Public Innovation School that will challenge each student with a curriculum built for their needs and interests academically and athletically.  We are now accepting Letter of Intent/Interest. By filling out a Letter of Intent/Interest, you are expressing interest to attend CWA pending approval of the school by CDE.  A Letter if Intent/Interest Form can be found at the bottom of the page.

Chatfield Wrestling Academy’s (CWA) mission and vision for the K-12 innovation school; to provide students opportunity to accel in learning academically, athletically, socially and emotionally.  CWA's whole child  approach paired with a personalized learning curriculum for each student is designed to drive individualized growth for each student’s areas of relative strength and weakness.  Personalized learning allows the scope and sequence of learning to flow at exactly the speed each student needs for academic growth, mastering skills and concepts before moving on.

The personalized learning philosophy is “right time learning” for the whole child. Our classroom will reflect the same philosophies and scope of sequence as our wrestling room.  The Chatfield Wrestling community has grown to expect high quality of teaching and coaching.

The coaches, families and volunteers that have made Chatfield Wrestling program successful all believe in this approach and are committed to seeing our students and athletes grow and excel.  The Chatfield wrestling community has seen amazing growth over last several years as a result of developing different classes for different levels of athlete.  Numerous wrestlers from Chatfield have already met some of their competitive goals; to become local, state, national champions and/or  All-American status.  Many more are demonstrating continued, consistent progress and have performed at/or above expectations placed in several of the most competitive wrestling tournaments in the country.

Wrestling is a demanding sport and requires the athletes to develop a level of mental toughness to progress and remain committed. Goal setting plays an important part in the process, and most of the accomplishments outlined above are consistent with the short and medium-term goals our athletes have identified and set for themselves. Additionally, to help our athletes maintain perspective, we promote long term goal setting, and frequently remind them of these “big picture” goals when they may be experiencing a difficult challenge or new learning curve. Common long- term goals include attending and wrestling for a D1 level program in college, placing in a NCAA tournaments, or being selected for the junior national or world team. As lofty as these goals may sound, we believe they are reasonable and realistic with the appropriate and necessary development and training.

From a the community perspective, seeing the athletes as they accomplish their goals and in some cases their dreams through their competitive careers.  The coaches & teachers at CWA  see wrestling as a core piece of  our academic  curriculum.  The constant pursuit of improvement in wrestling teaches personal accountability, the benefits of hard work and dedication, as well as ‘soft skills’ such as dealing with pressure and adversity. Opportunities to teach and nurture these important character traits can be presented in the classroom and in other sports as well. Through wrestlers’ careers, they learn how to constantly set SMART goals, the work/effort it takes to accomplish them, self-reflection throughout the process of attaining those goals,  self dependence and self-confidence as they realize that the once far out goal is very attainable.  Increasingly, these are the traits and skill set that employers are searching for in their employees. This point is also made in a Forbes Magazine article titled “Why Wrestlers Make the Best Employees’. In Wrestling athletes do not have to achieve their goal of becoming a State, National or World champion to learn and develop these important qualities; they are learned and developed in the pursuit of the goals. Perseverance, mental toughness, and the ability to continue when faced with adversity are lifelong skills and personality traits obtained through wrestling that serve the athlete for the rest of their life.

Many Chatfield Families have recognized positive changes in their child in as little as one season.  The initial changes are typically subtle and are centered around gains in confidence such as the feedback we recently received from one parent indicating their previously shy ten year old daughter now has the confidence to stand and speak in front of her class, which is something she would have not done prior. Another example is 7 years old who struggled in the past with anxiety when facing new experiences and/or new people, is now able to participate with confidence in class and other sport. For one high schooler wrestling has provided the ability to focus during the season enabling them to achieve their best grades of the year.  Our wrestler’s parents have seen their children grow cognitively, physically, socially and emotionally through our program.

Parents are searching for the best opportunities for their child to grow and thrive as they develop through adolescence and into their careers. Commonly, that means a traditional school setting during the day to provide academics learning,  and athletic practices in the evening to learn and gain the emotional benefits outlined above.

Under the traditional structure is very common between school and athletic demands for them to endure 12-14 hour days, multi days a week.  This demanding and exhausting schedule adversely affects both their academic and athletic progress.  Moreover, because of the intensity of these scheduling demands they have very little time to adequately complete homework assignments, collaborate on group projects, or participate in important interactions with family and friends.  By combining there two important pieces (academics and athletics) CWA students and families have a much better balance and aren't’ constantly forced to sacrifice on one of these equally valued priorities. The CWA innovation schools will foster an environment that allows each student to excel academically while building personal skills through wrestling that will support their focus on success for the rest of their life.

CWA School Philosophy:

1 to 15 Teaching ratio

Personalized learning: In an era where standardized tests are the norm, personalized learning offers a different perspective on education-a student-centered one. CWA paced to student learning needs and tailored to student learning preferences and interests. Each family will have a different class schedule and curriculum designed for their child.

Whole child Approach: The demands of the 21st century require a new approach to education to fully prepare students for college, career, and citizenship. Using technology as a pathway to deliver core and electives each day.

CWA Wrestling Philosophy:

Wrestling & Club Facts:

  • Chatfield Wrestling Club will still operate in the same capacity at a minimum, with the same goals to provide the best coaching and opportunity to kids at every level.  The CWA is an option, not a requirement.  It is very important to not jeopardize the operation or integrity of the club while providing this opportunity.
  • CWA will not have a ‘Varsity team’ which will allow students to compete with local high school following current CHSAA rules.
  • Students will participate in wrestling daily as part of the curriculum, just like math, science or history teachers & coaches will have to work to engage the kids every day. We believe in the values and that children learn from challenging themselves within wrestling.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How does it benefit the current goals of Chatfield Wrestling to move into a building or outside of the high school.
    • There are obvious benefits to running the club through the high school, however the growth of the club has caused large practice sizes, late practices, and limited options for growth.  We believe in providing the best coaching and experience for each wrestler from 4 year old beginners through our high school age wrestlers. Moving to a facility dedicated to the growth and positive experiences of all our wrestlers in the Chatfield/Littleton area and beyond, will allow more kids to learn the valuable lessons all wrestlers realize.
  • How will the Club Change.
    • For wrestlers that do not participate/attend CWA during the day, very little will change.  Practice times and schedule's will be changed as needed.  Practice times will likely be earlier as we will gain flexiblity with mat time due to not having to share with the high school.
  • Where will our kids practice?
    • With the applilcation still in progress, the facility location is not finalized.  We are committed to remaining with-in or as close to the Chatfield articulation area.  We believe very strongly that the Chatfield community at large is our base and will not move out of the area.  We are Chatfield Wrestling.
  • Why Start a School?
    • Two core reasons, the first is that we have been asked to provide this for our wrestlers that have goals that include pursuit of state, national and world championships.  At the core of Chatfield Wrestling we have always been committed to providing the level of coaching and training that our wrestlers need to pursue their goals.  As our wrestlers grow so do their needs.  We are willing to evolve and provide the opportunity that our wrestlers are asking for.  The second core reason is largely due to parents looking for more for their children than their current school is offering.   Class sizes are large and parents feel there kids are being over looked.  Leading our academics is an educator with over 20 year's experience in various styles of schools we feel we can provide better for our kids.
    • Academics Stregthens sport & Sport Strengthens Academics:  Article
  • Will this be an online school?
    • We will use technology to bolster our classroom & curriculum.  Our teachers will use technology to teach lessons as needed, not the other way around.  Depending on the subject computers & computer programs can teach at a very personalized pace and reinforce lesson's learned.  On the other end of the spectrum is classic teacher to student interaction that is critical to the learning process.  Each subject and lessons that make up the curriculum will include technology & teacher time with teacher interaction being the priority.
  • How will You Manage 30 kids curriculum's & provide wrestling to that large/diverse group.
    • The kids & parents will meet with our director & teachers with their tests score in each subject to find where each kid fits in each subject.  The reality is that while a 3rd grader is in 3rd grade overall he maybe in 1st grade reading level, 4th grade math level have 3rd grade social studies and science.  Currently in most kids classes they are being managed at this level already, however their teacher's do not have the support to focus on moving each kid beyond their grade level.  We will be able to manage this better with much smaller class sizes.  Kids will be grouped by subject and work at their level, then pulled back together with group projects, field trips, group study.  In addition by adding our wrestling courses in we will rotate kids through wrestling & class similar to our PE classes are run in most school.   Small group drilling sessions and work outs will facilitate 1:1 coaching and teaching.  For example, while 6th-8th grade kids are in class working on math, 2nd-5th graders maybe getting their day time mat time in.
  • What is the time line for enrollment, school approval?
    • We are currently working with Jeffco board members to turn in the Application, and expect to turn it in to the Jeffco board for review in February.  Our intent is to start school at CWA in the 2019-2020 school year.  Currently we are collecting Letters of Intent for interested students.  These will not be binding however this will serve as notice to CWA of interest and intent.  Parents and students should still open enroll their students into their current school or school of choice per jeffco policy.  To request a letter of intent, join the CWA Progress News Letter or request more information Email ChatfieldjrWrestling@gmail.com.
