ATHLETICS 9 RED SOX 2

Josh Mowrey, who led the league in regular season wins, added his second post season victory, pitching the A’s to the American Division title, the fourth championship for the team. It was also the last game for Greg Kelm, who announced his retirement after spending many seasons as a player and more recently, as a manager in the NABA Palm Beach League Six A’s had two hits apiece to lead their 15-hit offense Sawyer Ijams and Henry Wilson knocked in two runs apiece. Chris Saxton had an RBI with a pair of singles. Danny Moya had a double and single, with one run batted in, and Keaton Ijams and Jeff Schector also had a pair of singles each. Kelm scored a pair of runs and had one hit. Greg Koutsis had a hit and brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Curt Hibbs added a single.

For the Red Sox, Rich Burns had three singles and drove in a run to lead his team in a losing cause. Mike DeLeeuw had two hits, with an RBI, and Greg Nicholson had a double and a single. Eric Gormley and Andrew Rubin each had a base hit. Mowrey’s control was, as usual, impeccable as he issued no walks, while registering four strikeouts, was never in any kind of serious trouble, going the distance for the win, and earning MVP honors. Red Sox manager Paul Chasse pitched six innings and took the loss. He gave up 13 hits, on eight runs, seven of them earned. He walked four, including one with the bases loaded and struck out three. Will Laughlin pitched the last two innings, giving up a run on two hits. He walked two and posted one strikeout.

The A’s won their first of four league championship, the AA title, the Spring of 2012 as the Blue Jays. They added the Fall AA title in 2014 and the Spring AA title in 2015. Ben Shuffain will take over as field manager for the Red Sox, with Joey Mazzeo bringing the core of his Palm Beach Rays’ team over to the Sox and will handle the team’s administration. Chasse will be concentrating on just playing, especially pitching, after doing such a fine job as the Sox’ manager.

TIGRES 13 BLADES 1 (7) The Tigres won their 16th NABA Palm Beach championship, and completed their second unbeaten, untied season in routing the Blades 13-1 at Santaluces March 5, 2017. They wound up with 16 victories, twelve during the regular season and two in the post season. They enjoyed one previous unbeaten, untied season in 2005.

The Tigres left little doubt about this one, scoring in the first inning on a two out double by Osvaldo Pedroso, chasing in Danny LaPerna who had drawn a base on balls. In the second, Eduardo Godinez powered a long 3-run home run to left field, scoring Cory Shaver, who reached on an outfield error and Raudel Torres, who singled, one of his three hits for the game. They added two more in the third, six in the sixth and closed it out with a run in the seventh, resulting in a 12-run rule victory. Godinez, with two hits, was chosen as the title game’s Most Valuable Player.

The Tigres used a quartet of talented pitchers to hold the Blades to just five hits and one unearned run. Luis Guzman pitched four innings of shutout ball, giving up three hits, walking one and striking out four. Lefthander Gabriel Feliz pitched the fifth, yielding two hits and an unearned run, and nothing a strikeout. With Guzman coming up an inning short of qualifying for the pitching win, the decision went to the third Tigres’ pitcher, Juan Mejia with a 1-2-3 inning. Keisi Portoral closed it out with a hitless 7th inning, and registering one strikeout. Torres led all hitters, going 3 for 4 and knocking in three runs. Rob Conver cracked a pair of doubles and drove in a run. Lester Jova had two hits, two runs bstted in, one on a bases loaded walk. Pedroso had a double, two RBIs and Shaver a single and an RBI., Nick Adames doubled in a run, and Mike Melendez chipped in with a double.
