Two in a Row !

The U-13 Strikers were at home on Wednesday May 16th hosting the St. Thomas Stompers. Chatham was looking to build on their good start to the season, and get back into the swing of things after having a week off. The game started better than you can script with Chatham wasting no time in showing their dominance. Only 2 minutes into the game, Alissa Burd pounced on a bouncing ball and fired a volley into the top corner giving Chatham a 1 – 0 lead. Chatham enjoyed the majority of the play in St. Thomas’ end, but they could not get another goal before the half, despite 3 or 4 good chances. Chatham came out a little flat in the 2nd half and St. Thomas pressured the Strikers backing them into their own end for 5 minutes. Once Chatham regrouped, they built up momentum and spent the rest of the half in St. Thomas’ end. They finally broke through when Allyson Huckle sent a hard corner kick in tight on the net, and the ball went off the Stompers’ goalie’s hands and into the net, for a 2 – 0 lead. Chatham made sure there would be no comeback bid by St. Thomas as Amber Lumley turned quickly in the 18 yard box and fired a left footed shot toward goal, and it went right through the St. Thomas goalie’s legs and trickled over the goal line. The 3 – 0 lead would be all Chatham would need to secure their 2nd straight home shut-out win. Chatham’s defence again shut-down any St. Thomas attacks and Brooke Foster cleaned up the loose balls to earn her 2nd straight shut-out. Chatham has scored 8 goals in 2 games, and from 8 different players. Chatham is back in action at home on Wednesday May 23rd against the other undefeated team, Oakridge.

The U-13 Chatham Strikers opened the 2012 season at home on Wednesday evening against the North London Galaxy. Chatham finished 2nd last season in the L5 London division and just narrowly missed moving up to the L3 regional league. They are hoping to build on last year’s strong showing and a good start at home would go a long ways in helping their cause. The Strikers showed they were up for the challenge as they continued their home field dominance and mastery. Emily McFeat opened the scoring midway through the 1st half when she jumped on a loose ball that resulted from team-mate Allyson Huckle’s shot. The goal gave Chatham a huge boost as they continued to dominate play and controlled the game the rest of the way. Moments later, Kaylee Boulley sent a nice pass over to Kristen Calabrese who fired home a low shot for a 2 – 0 Striker lead at the half. Chatham came out blazing in the 2nd half as they again pinned the Galaxy back in their own end and continued to pelt the North London goalie with shot after shot. Ceara Travis controlled the ball at the top of the box and fought off a Galaxy defender to send a brilliant pass over to a wide open Paulina Maslak who calmly slid the ball home for a 3 goal lead. Chatham players were relentless as Rhea VanHelden stepped into a shot from 25 yards out, and it proved to be as pretty a goal as you will see, as it skimmed the underside of the crossbar and bulged the twine in the back of the net. Not to be outdone, Jana Kucera cruised with the ball down the end line and in on goal when she spotted a team-mate streaking in on goal. Kucera slid a perfectly timed pass across the goal mouth and Alyssa Broeders met in in full stride to bury the striker’s 5th and final goal of the match. Chatham ended the game with a flurry of shots at goal, a couple off the post and some just wide. The 5 – 0 victory was a total team effort as 5 different players (2 of them defenders) found the back of the net, and the Chatham defence limited North London to only 2 or 3 scoring chances as Brooke Foster and Kaylee Boulley shared the shut-out. Chatham is off for a week before hosting the St. Thomas Stomp at home.
