MEC Night Back On!!! - Hooray!

Posted by Duncan Mack at Apr 29, 2010 3:08PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Hello Again!
Well, once MEC heard that lots of us were hoping to come to look around the store and make good use of the 10% discount, they reconsidered and are now offering it to us again!
The offer is from 5-7pm on May 4. Please check in at the front door at the table there. Say that you are a part of Power To Be and they will give you a wristband. That wristband will allow you to make purchases with the discount. Please remember that you must have the $5 lifelong membership in order to purchase anything at MEC (and you can easily sign-up in the check out line if you haven’t already got one).
Hope to see you there!

Hey Team!
So, the MEC night that was going to happen on May 4th has been cancelled. I guess MEC was having some troubles staffing the event. They’ve said that they’ll try to reschedule it for later. Sorry! Hope you weren’t waiting on that day to get a good deal on that something special. I’ll keep you informed on when the new day is. Sorry about this – I too had my eye on a few things that I could use the discount on!

Need Work?

Posted by Duncan Mack at Feb 10, 2010 2:25PM PST ( 0 Comments )

Hello hello!
If you’re looking for work, VanTreight Farms is hiring people for daffodil picking right now. You get paid for what you do, not by the hour, so it’s a chance to really make a buck if you work hard and fast. It’s nice to be outside doing stuff like this, so it’s a good option if McDonald’s isn’t really your thing. Check them out online at daffodil.com They’re located out in Saanichton area, but totally reachable by bus.
You can call them at 250-652-1131 or fill out the online form at http://www.daffodil.com/hiring/index.php
Mention that you’re in Power To Be and it’ll really help! We’ve talked to them a bunch and they’re interested in hiring you! Worth checking out!

Want to get involved with SLUGS?

Posted by Duncan Mack at Nov 16, 2009 2:03PM PST ( 0 Comments )

Thought some of you might be interested in this program that’s going on (outside of PTB)

Do you want to make environmental changes in your community? Are you interested in learning about growing food in the city?

If you are aged 15-18, living in or near Victoria, and answered YES to the questions above, the Sustainable Living and Urban Gardening Skills (SLUGS) program is for you! In this program you will learn tonnes of do-it-yourself skills for living sustainably in the city.

Through a weekly after-school workshop and a monthly field trip, SLUGS will give you all the basics you need to know about how to produce food in urban areas. We’ll cover topics such as: permaculture, beekeeping, mushroom cultivation, rainwater harvesting, keeping chickens in the city, fibre arts (ie. spinning wool, felting, weaving…), seedsaving, setting up community gardens, canning and dehydrating food, and whatever other topics you want to cover!

The program topics will be shaped by YOU. Throughout the program you will help determine what presenters we get in, what field trips we do, and what special workshops you want covered.

Each participant will be responsible for maintaining a small garden plot during the program to put into practice what is learned. If you don’t have access to the dirt, we’ll help you find a garden plot near your home.
