Tigers Earns First Victory

Posted by Andy Norton at Mar 1, 2013 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

From the Douglas County Sentinel:  The Douglas County baseball team picked up its first win of the 2013 season, defeating South Cobb High School on Saturday. The Tigers (1-4) shutout the War Eagles 5-0.

“We played a fundamentally sound game,” said DC coach Alex Duhaime. “In practice we have stressed catching, throwing, and putting pressure on their defense, and we did that today. It was cold, with snow flurries at times, but we fought through it.”

After two inning of shutout baseball, Douglas County got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Ricky Lindsey led off with an infield single and after two outs, Drew Norton reached on an error by the third baseman and Linsey rounded the bases and crossed home plate for a 1-0 Tiger lead.

David Ihrig picked up the win on the mound. He allowed only one hit over five innings of work, striking out four and walking one. Gaines threw the final two innings for DC, allowing one hit, striking out three and walking none.

Douglas County High School’s new Varsity Head Baseball Coach Alex Duhaime is ready for the 2013 season.  The Tigers moved from quad-A to six-A this year, and will be playing a three-games series when playing against other teams in their region.

Duhaime, who played four years of collegiate baseball as a starting second baseman, has been an assistant baseball coach since 2008. “When Alex played at Chattahoochee Valley Community College for two years, he made quite an impression on head baseball coach Adam Thomas,” said DCHS Principal Tim Scott.  “Coach Thomas told me that Alex has the best work ethic out of anyone who has ever gone through his program.  And he has had many players go through his program, including 14 guys selected by Major League Baseball teams,” said DCHS Principal Tim Scott.

“I’m looking forward to a great season, and I’m excited about the direction our baseball program is heading,” said Scott.

After Duhaime’s playing days at the University of West Georgia came to an end, his next goal was to become a head coach. “I am truly grateful to be the new head baseball coach at Douglas County High School.  It’s an honor for me, to have the opportunity to teach the game that I used to play.  With the knowledge I have acquired during my playing and coaching career, I am ready to take the reins and catapult this program to a perennial level.”

Duhaime believes that coaching is being able to formulate a system and to have the team buy into that system, to achieve a common, aspiring goal.  He knows that fundamentals are the key to any team’s success.  Duhaime said, “Highly talented or not, it is crucial to take the outs the opposing team gives you and not give up free bases.  The opposing team, umpires and fans always play a role during the game, but control what you can control.   I am certain that coaches don’t make players, but players make coaches. “

The Varsity roster is as follows:  Brendan Anderson, Tyler Arnold, Tyler Blamble, Tyler Gaines, Nigel Hale, David Ihrig, Stanley Jones, Ricky Lindsey, Connor Moroney, Payton Myers, Drew Norton, Ellis Richardson,  Logan Tillem, Chaz Wagner and Dylan Wilkie.

The JV team is Carlos Beasley, Joe Caldwell, Tyler Clemmons, Frankie Cousin, Mike Gillespie, Dustin Gray, Ryan Kone, Ashton Munroe, Jackson Renner, Nick Robish, Trey Stevens, Shane Tillem, Cody Tucker, Kalem Vargas and Carson Wiles.
