After a pair of tough Blue North games against Kent Roosevelt and Cleveland Heights, the Wildcats took a step in the right direction offensively with a 9-0 win over Lakewood during the first day of the Rocket Invitational at Winterhurst.

Junior Jake Wolfe had a hat trick for the Wildcats, in a game they dominated from the opening faceoff. Mayfield fired 45 shots on net, including 21 in the second period on Lakewood goalie Alex Hudock.

Freshman Dominic Horvath lit the lamp for his second career high school goal on a beautiful pass from senior Jake Malone. Senior Anthony Krueger won the ensuing faceoff, leading to junior Ryan Tropf's second goal of the game just nine seconds later.

Senior Eric Spaner beat Hudock with a low wrister for his first goal of the season late in the second period as the Wildcats took a 7-0 lead into the third.

Malone had a goal and two assists, junior Christian Verde added a goal and an assist and junior Anton Liubin recorded two assists in the blowout victory.

Junior goaltender Matt Mramer had a smooth afternoon in net. He made 10 saves for his second shutout of the year as the Wildcats improved to 4-4-1 heading into a showdown with Blue North-rival Nordonia in Day 2 of the weekend tournament.
