Don’t Think Son, It Only Hurts the Team

Posted by Tom Dixon on Nov 03 2013 at 04:00PM PST

Sometimes the brain gets in the way while playing baseball. That’s when coaches and teammates can come to the rescue.

That situation certainly was the case for Todd Matthias on June 3, 2003 at Greenwich High School. With the score tied at 9-9, Todd told Clippers player-manager Tom Dixon he planned to bunt for a hunt to lead off the top of the 12th.  Todd had been struggling at the plate during the extra-inning game against the Greenwich Dodgers .

But Tom responded, “Just go up there and hit the ball hard. Maybe way out there.”

Well low and behold, Todd smacked the first pitch over the right field fence. Needless to say, he received a raucous reception from Tom at the third base coaching box as well as his thrilled teammates in the dugout. The Clippers held on for a dramatic 10-9 victory.

The head coach at Bethel High School where Tom played football used to tell the players, “Don’t think son. It only hurts the team.” That motto was proven yet again in that wild game.
