Some people say soccer's a matter of life or death, but it isn't.  It's much more important than that.  ~Variation of a famous saying

Sara Thomas: "You had a chance until I stepped on the field."

You have got to shoot, otherwise you can't score.

If you think you can, you can. And if you think you can't, you're right.
Mary Kay Ash

He is able who thinks he is able.
Buddha

The greatest pleasure in life is being able to do what someone else told you you'd fail at. I'm a strong enough person to accept failure, but I'm not strong enough to handle not trying.
Author Unknown

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

It's hard to beat a person who never gives up.
Babe Ruth

Whether you think you can or you can't, You're right.
Vince Lombardi

Do not throw in the towel; use it for wiping the sweat off your face.
Unknown

Now here is a little poem. It is titled It's All In Your Mind

If you think you're beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you'd like to win, but think you can't
It's almost a cinch you won't.
If yo think you'll lose, you've lost,
For out in the world you find,
Success begins with a fellows's will;
It's all in the state of mind.

Full many a race is lost
Ere ever a step is run:
And many a coward fails
Ere ever his work begun.
Think big, and your deeds will grow:
Think small, and you'll fall behind:
Think that you can, and you will.
It's all in the state of mind.

If you think you're outclassed, you are:
You've got to think high to rise,
You've got to be sure of youself before
You can ever win a prize.
Life's battles don't alwys go
To the stronger or faster man,
But soon of late the man who wins
Is the fellow who thinks he can.

"Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all time thing.

You don't win once in a while, you don't do things right

once in a while, you do them right all the time.

Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing."

This year each team will participate in two local tournaments (within the valley) and 1 limited travel (limited travel means within the state ie: Logan, Ogden, Provo) These will be determined once a team has been formed. Age, level of play/experience and general goal of the team will all play a role in what the team will participate in.

**SLS SELECT TEAMS AND Tournament Travel It is the goal of SLS to make tournament play a positive experience for players and parents for those who would like to participate, yet not require it of those who cannot or would not choose to travel.
**Most competitive players want the added training and competitive play experience during the season yet many may not want to commit to a team because of required travel due to added expense, Sunday play and travel away from home. SLS will not require any player to travel  that does not wish to, yet they will still be able to participate in a highly competitive league during the Spring/Fall seasons and winter indoor play. Players will in no way be penalized for not traveling and playing on an SLS Select Team.

To those who are looking for the added experience and exposure that tournament travel/play has to offer. SLS will create Select Teams (SLS Select) Players will be invited to be on SLS Select Teams based on
1-Desire to travel/play
2-Level of commitment (game/practice attendance)
3-Performance (Coachability, desire, behavior etc.)
4-Ability to meet the required travel expense
Players that play on SLS Select Traveling teams will not be required to participate in every traveling tournament. Players/Parents will have the option to participate in those which they desire and can afford.

It is the policy of the Salt Lake Scorpions Club that players attend every practice, game tournament and team activity to for the duration unless the coaches have stipulated that it is optional. This equates to about 3 hours of practice and 2-4 hours of game time per week during the on season (6 months, Aug-Oct., March-May). Off season is 1-2 hours of practice, 1 hour of games (4 months Nov-Feb, June-July). Break, with no soccer commitment (2-4 months Nov or Dec, June or July).

It is the player’s responsibility to plan and organize their schedule to meet this commitment. This might mean certain sacrifices must be made. Missing your soccer commitment is not acceptable.

A good competitive team, high school, as well as college teams expect this level of commitment; it has been done by players while at the same time maintaining grades, a well rounded life style and meeting family, religious and other extra curricular activities.

It is to your advantage to meet the expectations and standards of the team and club. The coaching staff puts a lot of time and energy into these teams. It hoped this is understood and that the passion, desire and commitment is developed and as you will see, it will pay off.

Sincerely,
SLS Coaching Staff

Player Absentee Request: (Please fill in the form below)

This from must be filled out for every event that aplayer is not in attendance. Forms generally should be filled out at least twoweeks prior to the day(s) in which you desire to miss.

The standard policy is that you do not miss during thefall, spring seasons and scheduled tournaments for any reason. It is important then to understand that even missing one time during the set schedule is already in violation of team policy. The policy is designed for competitive players who desire to play and compete at a competitive level.

Players/parents should review the parent orientation packet which details the unforeseen circumstances that are deemed acceptable. Players and parents alike must understand that regardless of the reason or circumstances, players must still fulfill make-up requirements as outlined in the orientation packet.

Players and parents should pay particular attention to the first week of each starting season in August and March when two-a-days occur. These are the most important training sessions of the fall and spring season. This is the time when players and team comes together both physically and mentally. Because of its importance and the numberof training sessions during this time, players do themselves and the team a great disservice by missing.

The attendance policy is designed to give a player relief only on very rare occasions. Players who miss more than three times in a given year are choosing to accept the make-up requirements and or probation as stated in the orientation packet.

Please note: Phone calls, verbal communication, and e-mails do not constitute notification of absence. Only this official absentee request form will be accepted. This absentee request does not guarantee that the reason stated is acceptable or that the request will be granted. If a player (parent) chooses not to attend the scheduled event, they also are choosing to accept the set policy as stated which includes: writtenreports, video reports and probation (nonparticipation in scheduled games).  Players who miss and do not turn in this absentee request form will be placed on probation and will remain until the absentee form has been completed and turned in regardless of the number oftimes they have missed.

Players may fill in the form below or upload the document and turn it in to the coach.

Important:When filling out the form please do not use the "enter" or "return" key as this will send your form before you have completed it. Please use your tab or mouse

SLS Coaches/Trainers

The biggest question SLS receives every year is: Who is going to be the coach? This is a legitimate question; after all it is competitive soccer and there are certain expectations that need to be met. It is understandable that parents and players alike want to have good qualified coaches whom they can trust, work well with developing soccer players and obviously know what they are doing.

The biggest challenge SLS along with all youth soccer clubs/leagues deal with is finding good qualified coaches. US Youth Soccer along with Utah Youth Soccer have set up a standard that all competitive coaches must have a minimum of a National “D” License; this provides that all competitive players will have a coach that has knowledge of the game and a basic understanding of the skills to be taught. (Lowest “F” “E” “D” “C” “B” “A” Highest).

Regardless of license level, this does not guarantee coaching quality. Coaching experience cannot be replaced, and can only be obtained through years of hard work and experience. Passion, personality, patience and teaching/communication skills all play a role in player development and team progression. Good/high level players do not necessarily make good coaches nor do good coaches always become great players.

The challenge is finding the right balance to create the best team/player and coaching experience possible.

SLS is committed to providing the best coaches available, experience has taught that this is what players and parents want and while this may exclude the weekend father who enjoys coaching, and the high school or college soccer graduate looking for their start, SLS is confident that this will raise the standard of the SLS competition program to a level not yet seen in Utah.

In order to meet this coaching demand/challenge SLS has spent a great deal of time and research in obtaining the highest quality of coaches available:

1-SLS is contracting with the Universal Sports Group out of California www.universalsportsgroup.com   who has a pool of over 450 licensed and highly qualified coaches/trainers that are recruited from all over the US/Europe and world.

Note: SLS has secured several coaches, profiles will be available to individual teams once teams have been formed. SLS will match the perfect coach/trainer for each of its teams.

2-SLS also has a wonderful working relationship with several of the Salt Lake ReAL MLS Professional Soccer Team players that SLS will be using for training/coaching. Because of the ReAL players first commitment is to their team they will not be assigned to specific teams within SLS to coach/train but, instead will be actively involved with all of the SLS teams.

It is estimated that the coaching/training fees will be approximately $35.00-$65.00 per player per month and may be more based on the number of players per team and number of teams each coach/trainers works with.

SLS is committed to creating the best soccer club in the state and providing the best coaching of any soccer program around!

Brennan Tennelle

RSL: Selected in the third round (37th overall) of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft on 1/18/08.

Another NCAA National Champion, UC Santa Barbara product Brennan Tennelle brings great versatility and a winning pedigree to the Real Salt Lake midfield. The 21-year-old Tennelle became the third ex-Gaucho player selected by RSL in the last two years, joining fellow rookie Tino Nuñez and second-year 'keeper Kyle Reynish in Salt Lake. Nuñez brings a wealth of experience to the Wasatch Front, having been an integral member of Santa Barbara's 2006 NCAA championship team as well as the 2004 squad that fell in the title match. While Nunez will be expected to deliver goals for the squad's Reserve Division team as he continues to develop, what set him apart in the preseason was his ability to hold and distribute the ball with his back to the net, this despite his non-traditional 5'8" "target forward" frame.

Great Players + Great Effort = An Awsome team!!!

Stars are not born, they are made, Got to be there to be Great!

The 100% club is a special club where players are recognized for their commitment and dedication on their journey to be great.

In a years time each SLS competitive team will have had around 150 practices and 70 games. This requires a great deal of time, sacrifice and commitment. In order to be inducted into the 100% club for a given season a players must have 100% attendance at all practices, games, tournaments and team activities within one of the four seasons.

-Summer June 1 - August 31
-Fall Season Play September 1 - October 31
-Winter Play, Indoor November 1 - February 28
-Spring Play, March 1 - May 31

Players inducted into this special club will be reward with

1-Reconition on the SLS Website
2-100% Club Certificate
3-A 100% Club T-Shirt or Club Hat
4-End of year special Dinner

Any player being inducted in all 4 100% clubs will receive a reward greater than I could ever give. Time will show you. However there is a reason why many of my former players are starting Varsity as sophomores and yet others are playing at university's throughout the country.

Juggling Club

Coordination and ball control are essential! In order to help in this area I have created the Sweet Spot 100 juggles club! The sweet spot is approximatley where the laces are. In order to be inducted into the 100 juggles club at least 25 of the 100 juggles must be on the sweet spot. The juggles must be continuous, without touching the ground.

It may be passed off anytime in the presence of any one of the coaches!

Players will be rewarded with unbelievable ball control and..
1-Reconition on the SLS web site
2-100 juggles certificate
3-100 juggles wrist band

The 1000 Shots in goal Club

"It's not what you do when everyone is watching, its what you do when no one is watching that will make the difference"

It is said of Mia Hamm, one of the all time greats in soccer, that before every game she would show up early and take 100 shots on goal.

To do it, you've got to practice it! Thus the 1000 shots on goal club.

Here's how it works:
In order to be inducted into the 1000 shot club you must take 1000 shots on a goal. In order to do this you must make up a chart that will include the dates, times and locations and a tally of shots on goal for that day. It also must include other information such as distance, angles (left, right, center, outside the 18 yrd line, inside the 18yrd line and so forth) and where you were aiming such as near post, far post etc. The chart must be signed each time you shoot by a parent that will verify your shot session. Once you have reached a 1000 shots turn in your chart and you will be rewarded with a stronger, more accurate shot. You will have also gained the confidence to take and make those GOALS!!!

You will also:
1-Be recognized on the SLS Web site
2-Recieve a 1000 shot certificate
3-Receive a 1000 shot soccer ball

JUST DO IT!

BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOW PLAYERS
WHO HAVE WORKED SO HARD AND HAVE BEEN
INDUCTED INTO THE 1000 SHOT CLUB:

SUMMER 2006-ALEXIS SCHMID, GIRLS U12
FALL 2006-KARISSA SCHMID, GIRLS U10
SUMMER 2002-SAVANNAH GARN, GIRLS U12
