The Philadelphia Women’s Lacrosse Umpires mission is to develop, train, and educate women’s lacrosse umpires in the Philadelphia Area. This mission has been accomplished on an unparalleled level for many years. We have developed some of the finest umpires in the nation and indeed in the world. Historically our umpires have been leaders in helping to develop umpires nationwide. Through our meetings and clinics we have helped our umpires to develop excellence at every level.

Playdays - Rating and Service

As a PWLUA member, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND A PLAYDAY AND PROVIDE LOCAL SERVICE EACH SEASON.  Playdays will count as one meeting. (Please remember you may only have 3 meegtings prior to March 23rd.)

March 10th - Haverford
March TBD - Methacton, Youth Officials
March 17th - Upper Dublin
March 17th - Radnor
March 18th - Radnor, Youth Officials
April 28th - Katie Sampson (Level 3 ratings only)

We would like to welcome Johanna Kent as a co-chair of ratings.  Please contract Johanna or Mary Sue Christopher (pwluaratingschair@gmail.com) to confirm your play day and rating eligibility. Cancellations will result in monetary fines. Prior to receiving ANY US Lacrosse rating:

• You must be a member in good standing/update your USL recertification, attended interpretations, paid dues, passed annual test, completed service and meeting requirements
• Apprentice in training for a Level 1 and Level 1, is for new officials
• Level 2 is for a level 1, who would like to advance
• Level 3 is for a level 2, who would like to advance
• All ratings require an on field evaluation and can be 1, 2, or 3 years.
Please review specifics on the US lacrosse website. Additional LOCAL Service opportunities can be discussed with Kim Kraemer (pwluamentor@gmail.com)
• If you intend to do college games, and your rating is expiring, you must attend either a Collegiate or Collegiate Select Rating event listed on the CWLOA website. http://www.coalacrosse.org/
• All collegiate ratings expire on December 31st and are 3 year ratings.

USL Test

The USL test is available online now on the USL central Hub through www.uslacrosse.arbitersports.com Please forward your results to the testing chair, pwluatestchair@gmail.com, prior to the test meetings on 3/15 or 3/19. You also need your test complete prior to a rating session.

US online course Training- All new officials (Level 1) must complete the Online Rules and Penalty Course in his or her first year.
USL Membership Account- Please take a few minutes to review your personal information on www.uslacrosse.org. If any of your information is incorrect, please notify Dawn Grothmann (pwluavicepresident@gmail.com)
Mentor Program- We are revising and improving our mentoring program. Please contact Kim Kraemer (pwluamentor@gmail.com) if you would like a mentor or if you are interested in becoming a mentor. This is a great way to ask questions and to grow as an official. Being a mentor fulfills some service requirements. Please look for more information as the season gets closer.
Integrity-Throughout the season, we encourage you to nominate a fellow official who has exemplified this season’s theme. Let us know how he/she displays “Integrity” through leadership, professionalism, and/or kindness. We want to award his/her positive energy and to share it with our membership and continue the excellence of PWLUA. Nominations should be emailed to Kathy Gregory (pwluapresident@gmail.com) with a brief description.

Our theme this year will be PREPARATION...best of luck for the 2018 season.

2018 Meeting Dates

Put all meeting dates on your calendar now! PIAA requires attendance at six (6) meetings, plus the PIAA Rules Interpretation meeting. Non-PIAA members must attend four (4) meetings, plus a USL Rules Interpretation meeting. Attendance at the USL Convention Rules Interpretation meeting does NOT fulfill the PIAA Rules Interpretation requirement. For umpires who are NON-PIAA members, PWLUA requires attendance at four (4) meetings to remain in good standing. The USL Convention counts as one of your PWLUA meetings, NOT A PIAA meeting. To be eligible for NCAA playoffs, attendance at a NCAA Rules Interpretation Meeting is required. NOTE: You may only attend 3 meetings for credit before MARCH 23rd, per PIAA requirements.

Important Reminders

PIAA dues are payable directly to PIAA. Membership includes a USL/NFHS rulebook which will be handed out at the PIAA Rules Interpretation meeting. If you are planning on going inactive, please go to the site and print out the Inactive Status form located under “Officials’ Forms” and forward on to Patti Kunkle at pwluasecretary@gmail.com

PIAA clearances. Background checks are required of all officials. (3 separate clearances are required) Please check the website for information and links to clearances. Do this ASAP.

USL memberships were due in September. Go to the website (www.uslacrosse.org) and update your membership, if you have not done so already. USL will provide you with a rule book of your choice. Be specific which rule book you would like, NCAA or USL (already provided by PIAA for registered officials). NCAA rule book is only for college games.

PWLUA dues can be paid on-line through our website (www.pwlua.org). Click on the link to “register online”. Due are $40 until February 15th and after that they are $55. New or returning 2nd year umpires dues are $20 until February 15th and $27.50 after that. Inactive dues are $10. Please complete the form to avoid suspension and fines. If you wish to pay by mail and avoid the online registration fee, please complete the form included on the last page of this newsletter and mail it along with your payment to:
