News and Announcements

Well team wise we had a very disappointing finish this weekend as we could only fill 8 of the 14 weight classes. Thus we had our worst tournament finish of the year. We were missing 125, 130, 160, 171, 189, 285 couple that with the fact that this tournament allowed one per weight class all of the wrestlers were the best their teams had to offer. . With one starter missing weight and 5 starters taking the weekend off for various reasons we had little chance of a top 5 finish. The wrestlers that were there wrestled well as a whole. We are seeing a slow maturation process take place. It seems to be around the 30 match mark that wrestlers really begin to find their niche. Wins come more often and wrestling becomes more fluid. Many are nearing that mark while others still lack 15 to 18 matches to reach that point. Our goal is to get a full roster to the State tournament with all of our wrestlers having 30 matches under their belts. This mat time is invaluable. The wrestling in the wrestling room is no substitute for real match experience. Results from this weekend are below.
103-Ben Willeford 4-1 3rd. He defeated the number #4 and #3 seads on his way to a 3rd place finish. He had an exciting overtime match against the #1 seed from Belle Chase but came up one takedown short in the overtime period when a scramble situation ended up costing him 2 points. The final 5-3OT score does not show how much heart Ben exhibited in his match.
112-Landon Carr 1-2 wrestled a couple of aggressive matches, but came up a bit short of the medal rounds after 2 days of competition.
119-Jake Leonard 2-2 found a little fire and made it to the third place match. In that match he had his opponent on his back and had the lead. Unfortunately he was reversed and lost claiming a 4th place finish.
125-Void
130-Void wrestler missed weight
135-Jonathan Ricau 0-2 had a tough draw and wrestled very tough. His opponents were older, stronger, and more experienced, but he fought from whistle to whistle. I was impressed by the fight he put up.
140-Seth Fontenot 3-2 also had some success wrestling several good matches but he failed to make the medal round as well.
145-Jared Dietrich 1-2 has started to find some success. He wrestled well against tough competition and and hit one of the best sweep singles I have seen all year.
152-All Sizzle no Fizzle this weekend for Seth LeBlanc 4-1. He came from the number 3 seed to make the finals for the first time this year. He came up a bit short in the finals, but wrestled well all day. The number 2 seed from Hahnville fell to the Mighty "Gene Mills" half.
160-Void
171-Void
189-Void
215-Kyle Campbell 2-2 wrestled well but failed to make the medal round. As his match total increases I believe we will see a more aggressive wrestler.
285-Void
See you at practice this Tuesday. Have a merry Christmas.

December 18th, Mighty Lion Open Update

December 18th, 2006 Mighty Lion Open Update
We did finish 8th this weekend with 79points. The top 7 teams were as follow:
1.St. Pauls 213
2.Comeaux 159
3.Brusly 146.5
4.Lafayette 127
5.Northside 104
6.John Ehret 89
7.Teurlings 86.5
8.St. Michael 79
There was a minor glitch in the scoring. Zach Braud did not end up as our point man somehow and we did not collect his 16 points. With those 16 points our team score is 95 and we climb to sixth place. In addition we were missing kids in 4 weight classes (119,125,130, and 189). If we could ever fill all of our weight classes we would be a real threat to the top 3. I know that it was tough for our team as we had to travel early to make the tournament. I appreciate everyone being on time Saturday morning. In addition due to work issues I was unable to attend. Coach Patla, Coach Hernandez, Coach Tommy and Coach Brock did a great job. Top performers:
103 Ben Willeford 4-1 3rd place loss was to #1 Treven Delaune (Ehret)
112 Landon Carr 2-2 one loss to #2 Anthony Lacava (St. Paul)
135 Zach Braud 4-1 3rd place loss was to #1 Dustin Lail (Lafayette)
171 Marshall Leavoy 3-1 2nd place one loss to #1 Jamel Wheatley (Northside)
285 Lindsey Leavoy 4-2 1 loss to #1 Devin Thomas (Lafayette) and one due to 5 match rule.
285 Jordan Staples 2-2 losses to #2 Algero (St. Paul) and #3 Inglus (Comeaux)
I am told that everyone stepped up this weekend and even those that lost wrestled well. As you can see we are getting closer and are only losing to the top guys in the state. The freshmen and improving every weekend and continue to impress me with their tenacity and dedication. The upper classmen are starting to become the leaders I need. Thanks, to all of the parents, coaches and wrestlers. GO WARRIORS!!!

Wariors wrestlers take second at Catholic JV.

Posted by Kris Kienzle at Dec 10, 2006 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
The warriors fought hard to garner a second place finish in the Catholic High JV tournament. The young team performed well and many of the young wrestlers experienced firsts at the tournament. We hope to build on this success with victories at this weekends tournament in Lafayette. This will be a big test for us and we will have to step up the intensity to be successful. We hope to see all of the parents in the stands there. The top five teams were as follow: Catholic High - 195 St. Michael - 137 St. Amant - 92 St. Paul - 77.5 Zachary - 64 Go warriors.

Warrior Open a huge success.

Posted by Kris Kienzle at Nov 11, 2006 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
The Warrior Open was the first wrestling tournament held at St. Michael in 9 years. The tournament was second to none. The officials, coaches, parents and wrestlers had nothing but positive things to say about the tournament. The tournament itself was unique in that team scores were not kept and there was no seeding. Catholic High won the title for most pins with Brusly taking a close second. This tournament was a blind draw which led to some interesting first and second round matches. Beau Town (Cath) and Ethan Wunstell(Brusly) met in the first round. Town prevailed and Wunstell went on to win 3rd. Alex Hurst(Cath) and Chris Nowowsisky(parkview) met after first round byes and Hurst slipped by with a close 7-4 decision. A game Michael Wascom(EA)met Chase Wise(St. Amant) in the second round of the 160 pound weight class. Wise came away with an 11-8 decision which landed Wascom in the consolation bracket. Wascom made the most of it pinning three opponents and taking 3rd.

The hospitality room was filled with the best jambalaya, pastalaya, white beans, and tons of other fantastic foods. The LSU game was playing on a 10 foot screen and the coaches could keep up with all of the wrestling action and all of the college football action. Any coaches that would like to come back to our tournament please let me know. Next year the prizes will be bigger and better and we will have a JV tournament Friday night.

Individual champions were:
103- Treven Delaune(Ehret)
112- Luis Alexander (Catholic)
119- Beau Town (Catholic)
125- Alex Hurst(Catholic)
130- Jeff Falcon (Catholic)
135- Mitchell Fisher (Catholic)
140- Trent Fresina (Catholic)
145- Zach Eunice (St. Amant)
152- A.J. McIlwain (Dutchtown)
160- Chase Wise (St. Amant)
171- Jordan Merceron (Redemptorist)
189- Matt LeBlanc (Dutchtown)
215- Gary D'Aquin (Ehret)
285- Jordan Staples (St. Michael) Other Warrior placers were 103 lb freshman Ben Willeford who scored a 3rd place finish in his first varsity tournament. Heavyweights Lindsey Leavoy and Kyle Campbell were 2nd and 3rd respectively. I also have to give a huge shout out to Coach Jimmy Bible for all of his work at the head table. In addition the warrior parents did an amazing job. They worked extremely hard to make sure wrestlers, fans and coaches were taken care of. This tournament was a success due to their hard work. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
