Up and down weekend at Lee High

Posted by Kris Kienzle at Jan 13, 2007 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
We had an up and down weekend at Lee this weekend. With a team as young and inexperienced as ours that happens. After looking at the breakdown of place winners at Lee I guess we finished about where we should have. We finished 24th overall out of 52 teams. Not to bad for us. I posted an article on Nola and I will place it in the handouts section of the website so everyone can have some perspective about this weekend.
The fact is only 2 freshmen placed in the entire tournament and Ben Willeford was one of them. 3 of our guys made it to the second day Ben, Marshall, and Corey. Two first year guys and a second year guy. The experience the underclassmen got was invaluable and will serve them well in the future. I am proud of our team as a whole because they conceded nothing and wrestled their opponents tougher than I have seen in past tournaments. That comes with maturity and this team is taking strides.
At times I am tougher on these guys than I should be. I am a fierce competitor and never like to lose. I apologize to those guys that I was especially tough on this weekend. You guys have worked exceptionally hard and I want you to enjoy this ride. I have to reset my mentality to the fact that we are a young team and are going to have some growing pains. Coach Patla seems to have a better handle on this and his wisdom is something I need at times.
I want to thank the parents for their support this weekend and over the course of the season. We need to get together to plan an awards banquet of our own. I know the school has one but we need one of our own. Our wrestling family has grown and we need to celebrate that.
Coach Bull
Willeford and Leavoy lead Warriors into Lee High Tournament.
Ben Willeford and Marshall Leavoy lead the warriors into competition this weekend at the Lee High Invitational. Ben enters the tournament as the number 6 seed in the 103 lbs. weight class. With losses to #1 Dupre, #4 Panepinto, and #5 Flick there are two wrestlers seeded above him that he has not wrestled this year #2 Matthew Guidry from Catholic High who replaces Blake Savoie as the Catholic High starter and #3 Matt Rabinowitz of Airline. Chase Landry of Comeaux and Ryan Carrier of Northside round out the top 8. If the seeds hold true Ben should face #3 Rabinowitz in the quaterfinals.
Marshall finds himself in the #5 hole behind Matthews (Jesuit), Gruwell (Hahnville), Koepp (St. Paul), and Jamel Wheatley of Northside. This sets up an interesting match-up in the quarterfinal round if both Wheatley and Leavoy win their first 2 matches. Wheatley took a win from Marshall at Lafayette earlier this year and Marshall will be looking to avenge that loss. That match could have significant implications for state seeding as both of these wrestlers are D2 guys.
There are several other wrestlers on out team that could make some noise. Keep an eye on Zach Braud at 130, Seth Leblanc at 152, and Jordan Staples at 285. These guys will need to find a good spot on the bracket, but if they do they could cause some trouble for upper seeds. Zach has been wrestling well over the last couple of tournaments and would love to find himself in the bracket by Dantagnan of Shaw or the Northside wrestler. Seth had a disappointing tournament at Brusly, but has been wrestling well in the practice room. I never count this kid out as he never quits and when inspired can pin anyone. Jordan Staples has become an undersized 285 this season dropping almost 30 pounds. His strength and tenacity could prove difficult to handle if he gets the right draw.
Several of our freshamn will be getting their first taste of Lee and I hope it motivates them. This is the premier tournament of the season and not many freshman get to see the mats. Even 1 win at this level is an accomplishment. These young guys have to strap up the head gear and use this weekend as a stepping stone. The experience they gain this weekend will help their maturation process as a wrestler.
I hope all of the parents are as excited as I am. Come see this great tournament even if it is just on Saturday for the semi-finals and finals. This is a great tournament and I congratulate all of those that are participating. All of those that did not make the cut this weekend still have a stake in their teammates success and that should not be overlooked. You are only as good as your partner and without him you would not be experiencing the success you have been. So, Warriors tell your partner thanks for all of the sweat and tears you have shed together and let him know how much you appreciate his sacrifice.
Ben Willeford (freshman) had a good run out of the #3 seeded position. He easily handled Garrett Granger from North Vermillion, after a first round bye, pinning him in 1:21. He met highly touted Matt Kimmel (23-2) of Evangel Christian in the semis taking him out with a convincing pin at 5:04. Ben was leading the match 22-8 at the time of the pin. In the finals Ben met defending Division III state champion Blake Panepinto. He aggressively attacked Blake, but came up short when he was pinned at the 3:53 mark of the 2nd period.
Landon Carr (freshman) wrestled well finishing the weekend with a 2-2 mark. His first round match found him pitted against Chris Carter (Sulphur). After an aggressive take down Landon went on the offensive and pinned his opponent in just 0:53. Landon met Daniel Morgan (Redemptorist) in the next round. The eventual Brusly champion pinned Landon in 1:14. Derek Hebert (North Vermillion) found himself getting pinned in just 0:55 as Landon advanced in the consolation bracket. In his final match he wrestled well until being caught with a quick move that he could not recover from resulting in a pin at 2:14.
Will Bellefontaine (freshman) poted a respectful 3-2 record on Saturday and showed some tenacity in all of his matches. His first match was a nice 1:57 pin of a tough Chris Landry of South Plaquemine. He then lost a tough 10-5 decision to state placer Ricky Bordelon(Redemptorist). After falling into the consolation bracket he reeled off two wins against Chris Bell (Sulphur) pin-1:15 and Derek Hebert (Brusly) major decision 11-1 before falling to Trey Elliott (Benton) 12-6.
Zach Braud (sophmore) had a tough draw and met a tough Jay Veasman (Dutchtown). After a first round bye he dropped the decision to Veasman 15-9. After falling into the consolation bracket he handily disposed of his next 3 opponents pinning Brooks Savoie (Teurlings) in 1:32,  pinning Dylan Rothell (Byrd) in a quick 0:26 and getting a 7-2 decision over Pearl River's Josh Barnhill. To get a share of 3rd place he met Spencer Gauthreaux (Brusly) after leading the entire match Zach gave up 3 back points with just 5 seconds left to lose a 10-9 decision. This was a tough break, but I am sure Zach learned from this esxperience and will not allow it to happen again.
Michael Podnar (freshman) after a late start this year because of the swim season Michael has shown flashes of brilliance. He went 1-2 this weekend, but gained valuable mat time. He did earn an 8-1 decision over Dylan Rothell of Byrd.
Jonathan Ricau (freshman) unfortunately Jonathan had to wrestle a pigtail match to try to get into the tournament. He lost that match to Ned Sonnier of North Vermillion and did not it into the tournament.
Jared Dietrich (sophmore) had a tough weekend going 0-2. He wrestled 2 tough opponents and was unable to get his offense going. At this new weight Jared will continue to make strides and will be a threat at the state tournament.
Tyler Boudreau (freshman) also had a tough weekend. He went 0-2. He continues to gain valuable experience on the mat and will continue to improve.
Seth LeBlanc (senior) had a respectable showing going 3-2 for the weekend. He pinned Matt Trahan (Teurlings) in 2:25 before falling to the tournament champion Beau Haydel (Brusly) 5-2. He then pinned Michael Roberts (Redemptorist) in 1:53 and Brandon James (Basile) in 0:36. Jeff LeBlanc (Teurlings) ended Sizzle's run beating him 9-1.
Derek Lemoine (freshman) scored an impressive fall over Cody Onxely (Sulphur) in 3:11, but lost two other matches leaving him with a 1-2 record for the weekend.
Meghan Hein (senior) was another wrestler stuck on a pigtail match. Unfortunately she lost that match and did not make it onto the bracket.
Marshall Leavoy (sophmore) apparently had little respect from the Divsion III teams as he was seeded 4th. This must have ignited a fire under Marshall as he pinned his way to the finals with wins over Will Smith (Northwest Rankin) 2:28, Mark Gragston (Benton) 3:52, and William Young (Brusly) 3:57. This led to a finals match against Jordan Merceron (Redemptorist). These two had split their 2 previous meetings. Marshall left nothing to doubt this weekend and went after Merceron forcing the action the entire match. Clean takedowns and a near fall resulted in an 8-4 victory that was not as close as the score indicates.
Clay Tucker (sophmore) entered his first tournament in three weeks after a shoulder injury had slowed him. The rust showed a bit as he dropped a 4-1 decision to Wayne Williamson of South Plaquemine and was pinned by Alex Borque of North Vermillion.
Chris Springer (senior) wrestled up to help us fill weight classes. He went 0-2 giving up alot of weight to his competitors.
Jordan Staples (senior) had a good weekend pinning 3 opponents each in under a minute. Issac Clark (Sulphur) 0:35, Kyle Harmon (Teurlings) 0:49, and Mike Harris (Teurlings) 0:39 all fell to the might throw. Interestingly enough Jordan lost both of his matches to the same guy Stefan Bergeron (Rayne). This allowed Stefan to claim 3rd place.

Warrior Wrestling takes on Catholic High

Posted by Kris Kienzle at Dec 27, 2006 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Warrior Wrestling takes on Catholic High
We had our dual meet with Catholic High on Wednesday Dec. 27th. This was the first dual meet at St. Michael in 4 years. With 12 of the 14 starters being first year wrestlers we had a tough time. Catholic cruised to a win when the Warriors could only muster one win. At 171 lbs. Marshall Leavoy scored a quick pin over Catholic senior Brandon Layman. There were some exciting matches and several other wrestlers fought hard. Freshman Ben Willeford had a tough match with Blake Savoie at 103 lbs. He pushed the pace and forced the action coming up just two points short after six minutes. At 135 lbs. Sophomore Zach Braud wrestled tough against Catholic's Mitchell Fisher. He dropped a decision after 3 rounds. Another close match was wrestled by Seth "Sizzle" LeBlanc at 152 lbs. He entered the 3rd period up by one, but lost a two point decision as the 3rd period closed. The coaching staff was proud of the effort given, but the results are indicative of our inexperience. With more practice and match time we hope to correct some deficiencies and have a better showing when we dual Dutchtown on Jan. 17th. We would like to thank all of the parents for their support of our program. Go Warriors!!!
