Hi!

I hope everyone is having a great time so far!  We have our first swim meet tomorrow night in Florham Park.  Warm up will start at 5pm and the swim meet will begin at 6pm. I put the directions on this email, and you can also find them on the website. We have two websites for this team. I will list both of them at the end of this email, feel free to check both of them for all of the information! Please make sure to give yourself enough time for the drive over to the pool.  I will have a sign in sheet ready at the meet for your children to check off that they are there! If your plans have changed and you cannot make the meet, please email me ASAP.

Our second meet is on Wednesday, it is a home meet! I will send out the information about that meet tomorrow. Please let me know ASAP if you cannot make that meet!

See everyone tomorrow morning at practice! GO MILLBURN!

Message from Millburn Swim Parents - 6/26/12

Posted by Antone Balbo at Jun 25, 2012 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Dear Parents & Swimmers,

We'd like to introduce ourselves.

  • Patty Hetherington - My swimmers are Mary and Emma Hetherington.  We have been a part of the Millburn Rec Swim Team for 16 years starting with my 2 sons who are now in their college years.
  • Diane Yih - My swimmers are Sarah & Kyle Yih.  This is our 5th year on the Millburn Rec Swim Team.  My kids have had a blast every year which is what keeps us coming back.

There are many team members who have vested years as well.  As with all other programs Millburn Rec offers, this competitive swim team depends A LOT on the generous efforts made by it's VOLUNTEERS.  It really does 'take a village'.  Every dual meet requires volunteer participation from each team.  We need timers, marshals, ribbon writers, announcers, scorers, runners, etc. There are many teams that mandate participation but we have yet to institute this due in large part by all who do volunteer.

Many thanks to those who have turned in their Meet Attendance forms and stepped up to volunteer at our scheduled meets. Volunteering has it's benefits.  You get a bird's eye view of how everything is run and you can really 'get up close and personal'. We are always thankful and welcome any help you can provide. It's always easier with more hands on deck. Please don't wait til we have to start tracking individuals down in order to meet our needs.

For those who are new to the swim team, we do try to enhance the experience with things such as :

  • Fun Fridays - Where instead of regular practice, the team spends that time having 'fun' in the pool. These Fridays are at the discretion of the coaches.
  • Picture Day - Both individual and team photos are taken by Bishop Photo who offer different photo packages for purchase.  This year's photo day is scheduled for July 9th (raindate : July 12th).  Both dates are home meets.  Picture taking is done at Millburn pool usually starting some time after 4PM. Details to follow.
  • End of Season Swim Team Party - Volunteers help to organize a party for the team usually held at the Bauer Center in Taylor Park. Details to follow.
  • Swimmer's Gift - Volunteers try to determine an economical memento for the season.
  • Coaches' Gift - Volunteers will start a collection.
  • Food Drive - Every season all the swim teams donate canned goods, non-perishables, etc for charity. Every team's donations are weighed and tallied and announced. It's nice to know that Millburn has more than once come in at the top. Details to follow.
  • Swim Team Clothing - Coaches arrange a variety of choices with Wolf Head Athletics for purchase. Details were sent out by Kelly earlier.
  • Parent/Coach Relay - Last year we had a friendly relay after one of the home meets with Parents v. Senior/Coach swimmers.  It was quite exciting !!

As you can see, there is a lot that get's put into this 5-week program. (You may note that this season, practice times began prior to the official start date which was to have been yesterday June 25th.  But the coaches, Kelly & Tom, took it upon themselves to arrange the extra early practices for the team on THEIR OWN TIME.)

The nominal fee that is charged by Millburn Rec only covers 2 coaches (for well over 100 swimmers), t-shirts, swim caps and life guard on duty. The rest is parent driven. We've tried to see if we could fund raise as many of the other teams do at meets with selling food/drink/snacks but this is all prohibited at our pool as well as any 50/50 raffles. We're always open to ideas and volunteers.

We look forward to another great swim season with everyone's help and participation !!!!!

GO MILLBURN !!

Sincerely,

Patty Hetherington (Volunteer Parent)

Diane Yih  (Volunteer Parent)

Meet Information from Coach Kelly - 6/26

Posted by Antone Balbo at Jun 25, 2012 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Parents,

As we prepare for our first swim meet, I'd like to take this opportunity to review some swim meet procedures, especially if this will be a first (just some nice to knows). With so many swimmers and family & friends at the meets, it can get overwhelming the first time but afterwards hopefully it will become routine. We have moved up a division, so the teams we have dual meets with are all different than last year which also means all new town pools to set up at. So please be patient with logistics. Click to follow to full text of Kelly's email.
