Swim for Food Competition Details

Posted by Antone Balbo at Jul 19, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Attached is the text of an e-mail I received from the person coordinating this year's Swim-For-Food drive. I am not completely sure how Joe and Kelly will decide to manage the effort this year, but I am attaching what I have (including an unofficial attachment) to help spread the word. Follow the link to see the Swim-For-Food website.

Dear Div 1 Parents and Coaches:
I just wanted to touch base to let you know where I am with planning this event. First though, thank you again for agreeing to participate! We have run three Swim For Food events this summer already.  We have collected over 2900 lbs of food so far, well on our way to our goal of 10,000 lbs this year.
  • I've attached a flyer here for you to email/distribute/post for your swim families. It should print on one page- but sometimes it does not, for some reason on some printers, so might need some local adjusting--thanks.
  • We will run this at Divisionals at the four locations. Div 1 is at East Hanover on July 27th. Last year, these five teams collected 970 lbs of food! I hope we can even exceed this :)
  • Food collection will be run as a friendly competition among the teams. Small trophies/plaques provided to all teams.
  • Some teams prefer to place a container out at the pool during the week(s) leading up to the event. This is great because it gives the swimmers a chance to donate beforehand and not forget on the day. We have little tubs that say Swim for Food on it and I can drop one at your pool if you'd like, but a box works fine as well. Let me know if you'd like me to drop off a tub but if you would like this food to count towards your total, please bring to the meet that day, or email me by the 24th and I can come pick up. Note that if you do not want to collect the week before, please amend the attached flyer.
  • When swimmers arrive, they will put their food into a tub labeled for their team. I will provide these at the meet... One parent is needed to help direct your swimmers to their container/area and to pack up and weigh your team's food. S/he should be finished before meet start so we can announce how much we collected. If you are not the parent who will help pack up the food before the meet, could you please let me have the contact info of this person-so I can give them some last minute information? One person from each team makes this go much, much faster :)
  • We will donate to a local Food Pantry.  I have a couple of options in the works, but want to be sure they can come to pick up at the pool. I have put the typical suggested preferences on the flyer. Swimmers do not have to purchase these items, but some families prefer some guidance. I will let you know which pantry in the next day or so.
  • Do you have an objection to putting out a money jar by each pool's food container so if someone forgets their food, they can put in cash and we will count $2=1 pound of food? This has worked really well at the events so far this year. Again, the team helper parent, can help direct their arriving swimmers where to donate their food, or suggest that they can donate cash if they forgot. The cash is being split--50% goes to the food pantry in the form of Shop Rite cash cards that they can give to the families to spend. The other 50% is being accumulated from all the Swim For Food events and we are looking at donating to an organization that connects local farmers with food pantries/soup kitchens. More info to follow.

Thank you very much for your help in supporting this event. The Food Pantries in NJ are so low now and are so appreciative of our swimmers' help! Please email me back so I know you are OK with all this and if possible, pls include name of helper parent for the meet.

Swim Fast, Feed Many

The annual year end party at the Bauer Center has been scheduled for Tuesday July 28 from 7:00-9:00 PM. Don't miss it!!!! Details are in the attached flier. Don't forget to get any pictures from this summer's team that you want included in the slide show at the party to Antone Balbo at abalbo@comcast.net or by leaving a CD with the files in the Balbo folder in the team box at the pool. Or simply bring a flash drive to a meet this week. I almost always have my laptop with me. Text of Joe's email follows:

Dear parents and swimmers,

This week is our last week of regular dual meets. We are scheduled to have one meet Wednesday, away at South Orange. The other will be held away as well, at Fairfield. I've included directions to both in this email. In light of Thursday's events, I am going to contact the Fairfield coached in advance of the meet and confirm that they are still able to hold the meet. If anything about either Wednesday's or Thursday's meets changes, I will send out an email beforehand.

Team photos are in! Swimmers who did not order the thick wooden plaques can find their photo orders in their individual mailboxes. Swimmers who did order plaques will unfortunately have to wait until practice in the morning, as they are locked away in the main office. Please see either myself or Kelly if you have trouble finding your photos.

Clothes are also tentatively here. We will pick up clothing orders tomorrow afternoon and attempt to distribute Wednesday morning at practice. Chances are that Kelly and I will not be dragging all the clothes to the away meets, so please show up at the pool to pick up your goods. Any clothes not claimed this week will be brought to the end-of season party. Clothes not claimed after that will go in storage at the pool until next summer, so please collect now!

Attached to this email, you will also find the official party planning flier for the 2009 swim team party! Please print out and return the form, along with your payment to either Kelly or myself by this Friday if you wish to attend. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about this email.
Joe Morreale
Head Coach, Millburn Swim Team

Dear parents and swimmers,

Due to unforeseen circumstances regarding travel by bus, the Fairfield team is going to be unable to attend tonight's meet, and as a result, has forfeited.

Despite this, I still hope that we will be able to swim as a team this evening. Kelly and I are hoping that we will be able to hold an in-house meet in which swimmers from Millburn compete against each other. This is a great opportunity to collect times for swimmers hoping to swim events in Divisionals without all the added competitive pressures stemming from a meet. As a result, I ask the following- that any swimmers who were hoping to swim tonight still show up expecting to swim. We will swim as many regular individual events as we need to, and then make up some relaxing relays. If you already have times or have more pressing engagements, you do not need to come. Kelly and I however, will make sure that every swimmer gets an opportunity to get a time.

This is a highly unusual occurrence and I'm sure there are plenty of questions. Please email me with your concerns and I'll do my best to answer them. I hope to see everybody tonight!

Joe Morreale
Head Coach
Millburn Swim Team

As the result of Fairfield's inability to attend tonight's scheduled meet (which was forfeited) the team was able to swim some low-pressure time trials and get some times logged for different events. Not to mention the doggie-paddle relay!!!!

Big win tonight against a tough Summit Team!!! Results Posted!!

Millburn takes the rematch at home after an early season away loss to the Sharks!! Slight revisions to reflect late additions/changes to swims now reflected in results.

In a heated competition that was once again decided in the relays, Millburn posted a 232-211 victory! Way to go Millburn swimmers!!!!
