SYBL LEAGUE IS A SERIOUS COMMITTMENT AND PLAYERS ARE EXPECTED TO MAKE MOST GAMES - PLEASE CONTACT MANAGERS FOR THEIR SPECIFIC COMMITMENT REQUIREMENTS AS THEY DO VARY BY TEAM.  See below for SYBL FAQ's.

 SYBL FAQ's:

Q: When does the summer season start and end ?
A: Practices begin immediately after school ends the week of June 20 (U9 & U10 Games MAY start June 27; U11 & U12 MAY start July 7th) and the season runs approx 5 weeks plus playoffs (if the team qualifies) which run as late as mid August.

Q: What is the commitment? How many games and practices per week?
A: The schedule includes an average of approx 2 games per week - practices are at the option of the coaches - last year's teams practiced 0, 1 or 2 times per week (many players are already in baseball camp during the day and do not need to practice).

Q: How competitive is this league?
A: Teams play to win.  Lineups and positions are set up to put the players in their positions of strength.  There is no minimum requirement of play time, though most teams use the "bat around" method of every player bats in the lineup (excpet the 12U).  That said, coaches work very hard to improve the skills of all players and make sure every player has the opportunity to contribute.

Q: Every year we go away the week of ______ (July 4 is the big one) with 150 of our closest family and friends on a reunion - will we be able to go this summer?
A: Most players miss an average of 2 of the 10 games. As a result of expected summer away time, our teams carry a roster of as many as 15 players. Each coach/team requests a different game % commitment - please check with them as they have to balance weekly schedules to make sure the team has enough players in the usual "big" away weeks.

Q: We have a summer house.  Will we be able to go away weekends this summer?
A: Rarely are games scheduled on the weekends in the summer except (i) rain make-ups and (ii) playoffs the 1st weekend of August. Last year our 3 teams averaged one Friday evening game and one Sunday evening game per team (except the playoffs which will likely be on the 1st weekend in August). As a result of expected summer weekend away time, the league tries hard not to schedule weekend games AND our teams carry a roster of up to 15 players.

Q: My child is by far the best age XX player, having already thrown 4 perfect games and hit .800 this spring with a 1.000 OBP and a 1.500 slugging % but will miss the entire summer season until the playoffs while we travel America visiting Division 1 colleges already recruiting him/her. Is that ok?
A: Probably not.

Q: How will my son or daughter be chosen for the team?
A: Tryouts will be announced June 2011 for 9 & 10 year olds.  11's and 12's should contact the team manager (listed above).

Q: How much does the season cost?
A: $150 for the summer season plus uniform purchase (re-usable in future SYBL teams).

Q: Is financial assistance available?
A: Yes, please contact our league president (Roger Lehrberg at rlehrberg@hotmail.com ). No one will be turned away for inability to pay.

Q: May I help coach?
A: Qualified coaching volunteers are always helpful! Each of our teams last year had 3 to 5 assistant coaches. Please contact the team manager (above) to offer assitance (if you can bake brownies even better!).

Q: My 6-year-old son and daughter (twins) are tearing up the rookie league this year. They are clearly the best 6-year-old baseball players in America and I am interviewing agents for them in June. May they try out?
A: No. Only players who have played in AA - (or equivalent league with kid-pitch - for example, West summer kid-pitch league) - may try out for the 9u team.

Q: How do I register for the SYBL league?
A: Registration is opened AFTER the teams are selected.  If your child is assigned a team you will be forwarded the registration link.

Q: When will I find out if my child has been assigned a team?
A: You will be notified well in advance to provide the opportunity for those who did not make the cut to register for one of the local Newton leagues (above).
