Red Raiders vs Red Devils Friday

Posted by Randell Owens at Sep 16, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
reprinted from The Madison County Journal online September 17, 2010 edition by Justin Poole

It was a good feeling Friday night for the Madison County Red Raiders as the team picked up their first win of 2010 over the Winder-Barrow Bulldoggs, even if it was a little sloppy overall.

Opening the game with an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, Cedrick Bush made it clear that Madison County was tired of its 0-2 record. Winder-Barrow tried to respond and get on the board, but was stalled by the Red Raider defense.

Marking his return to the field after an injury in the Salem game, Hayes Hill helped the defense keep Winder-Barrow under control.

“Winder-Barrow’s fullback was a punishing runner,” Madison County head coach Randell Owens said, “The kids probably got tired of tackling him because it hurt.”
Owens added that fumble recovery and the secondary containment played a big part in the overall victory. While on the offensive side of the ball Madison County had a marked improvement in blocking as well as the better decision making by the quarterback.

Still things weren’t perfect and Owens at times it seemed they were taking two steps forward and three steps back. Madison County totaled -6 yards rushing and were recalled on two touchdowns for penalties.

What really made the difference was the mental attitude of the Red Raiders.

“Madison County felt like we could win this. We have a tradition over Winder-Barrow and they probably saw it as a possible win while we felt like we could win,” Owens said.

This week it is back home for the Madison County Red Raiders, as the team prepares for Loganville’s Red Devils.

According to Owens, the Loganville team is going to remind the Red Raiders a little of the opener against Flowery Branch.

“They are very balanced and similar to Flowery Branch,” he said. “They have a multiple offense that can run or pass. We have to expect to see both.”

Some heavy attention will be focused on the Madison County kicker and punt team this week, as Owens wants to make sure to put Loganville a long way away from the end zone.

Between these region opponents, Loganville won the last two meetings, but Madison County holds the record with four wins over the Red Devils. Loganville is 1-1 so far this season and on paper match up well against the Red Raiders, which should prove to be a strong competition on the field Friday night.

Madison County versus Loganville kickoff at 7:30 p.m. in Danielsville.
