MCHS Looks to Trick a Win From Wildcats

Posted by Randell Owens at Sep 30, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

While last week’s game at Habersham didn’t go as hoped, the Madison County Red Raiders are back on the gridiron this week hosting a team that is all about pressuring the attack.

Friday night is the Red Raiders taking on the Wildcats in the sixth week of the season.

The Apalachee Wildcats are 3-1 coming into Friday night having already faced three of the same teams as Madison County. Apalachee has defeated Habersham and Salem, but fell to Flowery Branch. After last week’s 44-14 defeat, the Red Raiders have lost to each of those teams. By a straight numbers game on paper, Apalachee would appear to be the team to bet on. However, Madison County is not out of the running.

“[Apalachee] is a Wing-T offense and an eight-man front philosophy defensively, but as soon as I say that they will get in a 4:3 quick as anybody,” coach Randell Owens said. “They like to pressure you and to attack. They will come after you and force the issue.”

How Owens plans to combat this on Friday night is by working on Madison County’s spread offense.

Week to week we exercise different portions of our offense depending on what people are doing,” he said.

Last Friday, the Red Raiders put the ball in the air a little more in an effort to regain some ground lost to Habersham, the boys also pulled a “trick play” that added some yards.

“Madison County is going to put some athletes on the field," said Apalachee head coach Shane Davis. "They do enough offensively to cause problems. They are probably going to use more formations than anyone we play. They use a lot of trick plays. We will have to be ready defensively.”

Owens, in response to hearing Apalachee’s coach comment, said that Madison County does like to keep a few tricks for opponents and see when to play them.

“We’ve been know to run a trick play here and there,” Owens said. “We always have one in the repertoire for various reasons, we are trying to keep people off balanced. We will always have a trick play or two for the opponent. … Sometimes it’s letting them work on a particular trick play that never comes.”

Apalachee comes to Danielsville on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Friday’s game is also Homecoming for the Madison County Red Raiders and during halftime, the annual crowning of the queen and court will take place.

MCHS Looks to Habersham Central for Needed W

Posted by Randell Owens at Sep 23, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
reprinted from The Madison County Journal online September 24, 2010 edition

by Justin Poole

It’s a redemption week for the Madison County varsity football team.

Coming off a loss to Loganville, the Red Raiders (1-3, 1-3) need a win over Habersham County (0-4, 0-4), but head coach Randell Owens knows those other Raiders from Mt. Airy need a “W” too.

Comparing Habersham to a wounded animal, Owens said winless Habersham will play with their backs against the wall, similar to Winder-Barrow a couple of weeks ago.

The real question is if Madison County can overcome Habersham’s option running attack, which Owens said the Red Raiders have had trouble replicating in practice.

“We would have been better prepped last year when we had more of an option team,” he said. “We will just see what happens and work on fixing ourselves. Win, lose, or draw you get ready for the next game. We can’t sit around and pout, you got to go back to work.”

Madison County is on the road this week, heading north to Habersham Central for the 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
