Madison County’s Kellen Harris hasn’t played a game in two seasons after missing all of last season with a torn ACL.

It was more like in the pop of a knee for Kellen Harris.

In the spring of 2009, as a sophomore, the Madison County tackle was blocking for a screen pass during practice when he planted his leg and heard a sound he'd never heard before - a loud pop from his knee.

"I really didn't know what happened and I thought I was OK and I went walking (around) to walk it off. I felt an extreme pain in my knee, and I just collapsed on the ground," Harris said.

It turned out to be the worst-case scenario - a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He required surgery over the summer and was unable to play during his junior season, which he considered a pivotal point in his career.

"I was really disappointed because my junior year, that was going to be my most important year to get my name out there," Harris said. "I was heartbroken, really."

While playing guard as a sophomore, Madison County coach Randell Owens said he could see that Harris had a ton of potential, but also said Owens had a lot of "puppy" in him, the kind of player that follows and hangs behind a little bit.

"With his size and everything else he kind of reminded you of a big sloppy Saint Bernard puppy that hasn't grown into his feet yet," Owens said. "A great big body that looked like a full grown dog, but kind of uncoordinated a little bit."

Now a senior, Harris has come back a changed person on and off the field after hard work in the training and rehab rooms.

"He's got much better body control, much better foot speed and he's stronger, but the biggest thing is just his maturity level has really cranked up. He's gone from the follower of the pack to the leader," Owens said.

Harris said the change from guard to tackle isn't too difficult a transition, but he is now responsible for protecting quarterback Alex Jordan's blindside.

As for the knee, he says it's "feeling great and I'm having no problems with it."

The only thing left to do now is play his first game in almost two years.

"I just can't wait, the anticipation is just so great right now, and I already have butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it. I just want to get on the field and hit somebody," Harris said.

That first game, however, is against the newest member of Region 8-AAAA - Flowery Branch, who moves up after reaching the Class AAA state quarterfinals last season.

"When we figured out our first game was going to be Flowery Branch, that was a shock to me," Harris said. "I'm real nervous about it, but I think we're ready."

Flowery Branch enters the region taking the place of Monroe Area, which was consistently the doormat of the region.

With their success in the lower class, Flowery Branch certainly brings more challenges to the region - one now widely considered the toughest region in the entire state.

But when asked what it's like to be the first to play Flowery Branch in the new region, Owens had a question of his own.

"What's it like for them to play AAAA football?" Owens said. "Are they any more intimidating than Clarke (Central) or Cedar (Shoals) or Apalachee from last year, not really. But it's going to be about like that every week against the teams we have to play."

Inexperienced Raiders Work Out Jitters

DANIELSVILLE - Matt Dove's first play in a varsity football game wasn't a pleasant one.

Madison County returns just six starters from last year’s team that finished 5-5.

"It was against Rockdale County and the senior in front of me got hurt," the senior lineman said. "I had to go in and it wasn't like JV ball at all. I went right out and got pancaked. I'm not going to lie."

That play was two seasons ago in Dove's sophomore year. As Dove prepares for his senior season, he is one of the most experienced players on a team full of youth and inexperience.

The Red Raiders graduated a large majority of their starters from last year, including quarterback Jacob Owens, receiver Patrick McCrary and lineman Connor Boyette.

With just six starters back, coach Randell Owens is faced with the difficult task of preparing a team full of newcomers for their first Friday night.

"Across the board, we are very inexperienced," Owens said. "This is the youngest team I've had since I've been here. And we are playing the toughest schedule in school history. ... We have some kids that have a lot of potential, but they are young and inexperienced. The only thing that is predictable about working with high school kids is that they are unpredictable."

As a team leader and one of the few returning starters, Dove has tried to prepare the rest of his team for what their first varsity football experience will be like.

"If you are inexperienced, you need to really go hard at practice because Friday nights are not like practice at all." Dove said. "It was really tough. If you have heart and you trust your teammates, you'll be fine."

Senior lineman Demetris Pattman made his first start three games into last season, making him one of the top veterans on the team.

Like Dove, his introduction to varsity football was a rough one. But as the season progressed, he grew more and more accustomed to it. But that doesn't mean he is immune from the pre-game jitters.

"I know my role and I understand what I have to do now," Pattman said. "The nerves and stuff before the game still come, but I know I have a job to do. I'm here to do that."

Last season, the Red Raiders started strong, but struggled down the stretch as the playoff picture started to become clearer.

They started the year 5-1 and were tied for second in Region 8-AAAA for much of the season, but Madison County lost its last four games.

Owens points to the teams they played in the latter half of the season, like Apalachee (10-0 in the regular season) and Clarke Central (state runner-up).

This year, the early part of the season might be the toughest part for the Red Raiders, as positions are solidified and nerves are eased.

"The biggest thing for us is if we struggle early, our kids can't let themselves get down," Owens said. "We have to keep working and keep getting better every week. That has to be the challenge."

The Red Raiders have some veterans on both lines, like Dove, Pattman and senior guard Kellen Harris, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL. But most of the skill positions will feature new names.

Owens hopes to rely more heavily on the running game to allow first-year quarterback Alex Jordan time to grow. That means running backs Cedrick Bush and Stan Maxwell will be the gasoline in the offense's engine.

But like the rest of the team, Bush and Maxwell will be getting their first taste of starting in a varsity football game when the Red Raiders host Flowery Branch on Aug. 27.

Dove said the sooner those players get past the intensity, the sooner they will be able to help their team.

"It is either get used to it," he said, "or get my butt kicked."

Last Friday’s scrimmage against Hart County shouldn’t be indicative of what Madison County football fans will see this season, but it did give the team a look at what to expect from Flowery Branch next Friday night in the season opener.

“We knew we were in for an uphill climb,” said coach Randell Owens. “It was your typical early scrimmage with a million errors. Hart County took control of it pretty quick and we battled back, but they steadily pulled away with it. There was a lot of good things we saw happen, but just too many mistakes.”

If scores would have mattered in the scrimmage, Hart County won 36-7 over Madison County. As strange as it may sound, that is exactly what coach Owens was needing for the scrimmage.

“We were trying to find someone who was going to give our kids a heads up as to what they were going to see in game one against Flowery Branch,” he said. “Here is the level you have to play to.”

Even expecting the fight, Madison County still had some areas where the green showed through.

“Our youth and inexperience really showed up,” Owens said, adding as an example, a fair catch off a punt that should been allowed to go into the end zone.

“The good news is that everything I saw is correctable,” said Owens. “We are going to have to see how many improvements we can make over the next week to close the gap. As coaches we know that teams make their biggest improvements between game one and game two.”

This week, the gridiron Red Raiders are back on the field Thursday for the Red vs. Gray scrimmage. The middle school starts at 5 p.m., with the varsity team splitting to play at 7:30 p.m.

This week and next week in practice, the Red Raiders will focus on the big opener against Flowery Branch. Owens said the Red Raiders were going to be focused on all areas during practice and it was going to be “from the ground up” work.

MCHS Heads to Hart County Friday Night

Things are about to get a lot more exciting on Friday nights in Madison County. The Madison County High School Red Raiders are ready to retake the yard and kick off the 2010 season of high school football.

This week, the Red Raiders head over to Hart County for the first of two preseason scrimmages. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night.

Even with the scrimmage against Hart this week and the annual Red versus Gray scrimmage next Thursday, head coach Randell Owens and the team are focused on a bigger game – the opener against Flowery Branch.

“We’ll focus on the scrimmage about the day before the scrimmage,” Owens said. “We’re focusing on game one against Flowery Branch.”

There is a lot for the Red Raiders to look at as they prepare to face the newcomer to the region. Flowery Branch is coming in with a Final Four state playoff finish under their belts and a 10-4 record from class AAA.

With the opener left to Madison County, it’s up to the Red Raiders to make a good first impression on the newcomers.

“The kids are working hard and it will be interesting to see how far we can take them in the next three weeks,” Owens said.

While the team may be looking past the scrimmages, the film from Friday’s game will be invaluable to coach Owens and the staff as they put in the final practice days before the big opener.

Hart County will not be a push over.

The Bulldogs made it into the playoffs last season and ended with an 8-3 record.

At least this week fans will get a taste of what is to come on Aug. 27, when Madison County official starts the season.
