Looking back on the Spring season

Posted by Frank Napoli at Jun 10, 2005 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Last Fall we had a winning record and outscored opponents. This Spring we were 2-11-3. So we must not have gotten better, right? Well, not so fast. Let's take a look at the 2 seasons. Last fall we played at the bottom of PAWest. Using the rankings from gotsoccer.com on the tournaments we went to we find that Hudson isn't even tracked and Hempfield is a "Copper" tournament. We also played in the lowest level at Hempfield. This Spring we moved up in PAWest playing much tougher competition (including the State Cup finalist) and went to 2 tournaments (MASC and AIM) rated higher than the ones last Fall. MASC is considered a "Bronze" tournament and AIM is "Copper", like Hempfield, except we played in the TOP bracket at this one. So, tougher league play and playing in higher brackets in tougher tournaments - there's the difference. Some of the good news on our recent outdoor season (16 games):
  • We have become a team that consistently beats the weaker teams in PAWest. Our record against these teams in Fall and Indoor was 8-1-2
  • We were outscored in the Spring - but only by 1.8 goals per game
  • We lost by 3 goals or more just 7 times - 4 of those teams are ranked by gotsoccer.com in their respective States.
  • We gave up 4 goals in a game just 3 times
Overall, this Spring was a step forward for the team - whether it felt that way or not!

IT'S OVER!

Posted by Frank Napoli at May 30, 2005 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
It seems hard to believe as it feels like the team has had a game every week since September of 2003 - that's 21 months - but the outdoor season is over. Because we are moving into U-15 next year and the girls will all be in High School, there will be no fall season. So the next Arsenal game won't be for SEVEN MONTHS in January of 2006. As we go through soccer withdrawal, here are best wishes for the girls to make their HS teams in the fall and all come back after the fall season to our practices in November.

Team goes 1-3 at AIM tournament

Arsenal's girls went to Buffalo and played strong on the second day (Sunday) beating the Cleveland Blues 2-1 with Sarah Hudac scoring the game winning goal on a free kick. The team came back that afternoon to play the second place BC Comets very close, losing just 1-0 in a game effectively without refereeing. Of the PAWest teams that went to Buffalo, only North United had a better record.

State Cup this weekend as season winds down

Posted by Frank Napoli at May 13, 2005 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Arsenal heads to Slippery Rock University this weekend to play in the PAWest State Cup. They wind up their Spring season with a Memorial Day tournament in Amherst, NY before the long Arsenal layoff begins. Our team will compete in U-15 next year. U-15 teams are prohibited from playing in the Fall season due to a coopperative agreement with the State High School soccer leagues. So, the Amherst tournament will be Arsenal's last for 2005 as we will get together for the indoor season next January.
PA West held the draws for State Cup on Sunday April 17th. Results for U-14 Girls were as follows: Group A: Beadling, Lake Erie, Mt. Lebanon, Northern Crew Group B: AFFC, Arsenal, IFC, Victory Express (Washington) Group C: Foothills, North United, PFC, STM Group winners plus a wild-card advance to the semi-finals. Round-robin play will be the weekend of May 20-22 with the semi-finals/finals 2 weeks later on June 3-5. OUR GAME SCHEDULE: Sat. May 21 2:00PM @ SRU Field 7: IFC Sun, May 22 9:30AM @ SRU Field 3: AFFC Sun, May 22 3:30PM @ SRU Field 4: Victory Express
