MAPA Paddlers tough it out at KI

8 MAPA members competed in the Kent Island Relays in OC-1s and OC-2 classes. Tim Jones and Jim Farrington finished second, Rusty McLain and Charlie Barton finished third and Randy Drake and ex-MAPA member Ed Sharpe finished fourth in the men's OC-1 relay race. Mary Gibbs, Kim Harwig and Freda Rosso teamed with Jodee Haynes (ex-MAPA member living in Hawaii) to win the women's OC-2 class. Even though it was a beautiful cloudless day conditions were challenging with a 10-15 knot headwind for legs 1 and 4. Several OC-6s hulied during the race. Twelve OC-6 teams participated with Manu'iwa finishing in just over five hours and the last OC-6 team finishing in just under six hours thirty minutes.

Big thanks to Chuck Conley for a outstanding race this weekend at the Botanical Gardens in Norfolk. The venue is superb and Chuck works very hard to cut through all the red tape to make the race happen. We had a great turnout of paddlers and everyone especially enjoyed cheering on the youth paddlers in the short race. What a great group of FAST kids! Click on the heading for Amy McLain's pictures from the race. Check out the race results.

Wednesday Night Time Trial

Posted by Freda Rosso at Aug 23, 2005 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

It's TIME TRIAL WEDNESDAY! The fourth Wednesday of every month there will be a Time Trial (Practice Race) at Newmarket Creek. The Time Trial will start promptly at 4:30 pm* and covers a fixed course of 5.5 miles (shorter course lengths available) that start and finish at the canoe launch at Air Power park on Mercury Blvd in Hampton. The MAPA Monthly Time Trial is a practice race with all your MAPA buddies that covers the same fixed course every month. The Monthly Time Trial is a proving ground for members and invited guests to try new things in "actual race conditions" and a way to gauge the effectiveness of your training, technique, new boat, paddle or partner. As always, after the Time Trail practice race, members are known to re-veal, re-tell, re-gale and re-hydrate during the debrief and debunk session in the parking lot. So come on out every month and join us. If you can only make one practice a month, make the monthly time trial. For results go to the news page or click on the headline.

See you on the Water,
