Tuesday evenings game vs South Charleston didint start as expected. After a grand slam by 1st Team All State player Amber Rankin the ladies could have easily folded. What ensued was anything but folding. Kayla came on tho pitch in the fourth and held them to one run in the fifth. In the sixth things got interesting. Thea Cooper drove a one out single and Brittney Napier promptly followed up with a towering blast to center making it 5-3. Erin Lowry was next.After Rankin gave a youre not going to do that gesture to fellow summer ball teammate ( Lowry), Erin followed with a blast to about the same place in center making the score 5-4. SC couldnt muster anyting in the bottom of the 6th and the Highlanders came up in the 7th hungry. Samantha Spurlock singled to left and with one out Napier singled as well. Again Lowey took a 3-2 count over the centerfield fence giving the team a 7-5 lead! In the bottom the Black Eagles didnt quit. With two quick outs Kayla allowed a single to Rankin and hit catcher Kris Taylor. The game ended on a caught line drive up the middle by Kayla to finallly put it away.
Our Highlandes went 1-1 over the weekend taking their first loss of the season. In game one versus Dublin Jerome from Columbus good pitching and hitting highlighted the win. Tressa Riley and Kayla Stinson combined for a strong 3 hit victory while several players contributed at the plate. Game two wasnt quite as fortunate. The Wheelersburg Pirates, one of Ohios' Division III powers defeated the Highlanders 4-1. They got their hits when they needed to and we just seemed to hit it straight at someone. Next up is Nitro Monday @ Nitro at 5p.m.
In a strong gusty wind on Monday evening the Highlanders defeated the Nitro Wildcats on their home turf 6-2. Both teams bats were cold in the first two innings. After a get your head in the game speech by Coach Wilson the bats responded in the third, plating a run taking a 1-0 lead. A walk and a hit by Nitro plated the tying run in the bottom of the fourth putting the girls in a 1-1 deadlock. This must of served as a wake up call becaus the bats exploded in the fifth with the girls plating 4 runs to put the game away. Kayla pitched a servicable 4 innings in the strong winds and Chelsae finished it off allowing only 1 score. Thea Cooper had her best day at the plate going 2-3 and scoring twice. Having her legs on base makes good things happen for this lineup. Trysten Gue, Brittney Napier and Erin Lowery also went 2-3 and Lowery had the game breaking double in the 4th inning driving in two. Kayla then followed with a line shot to left plating the other two runs. South Charleston is next at their place Tuesday in a battle of two of the states top ranked teams.
Our Lady Highlanders continue to notch W's running their record to 7-0 with 4 victories in the last week. Tressa Riley defeated George Washington last Thursday 9-1 allowing only 1 earned run and striking out 9. Sam Spurlock and Brittney Napier each had multiple hit games and Erin Lowry homered. On Tuesday Chelsae Holley got the win against Beckley 9-2. Thea Cooper, Taylor Curtis and the hot hitting Spurlock each pounded out two hits apeice.Riley got another win versus Capitol on Wednesday in a lop sided game played in poor conditions. Holly again took the mound Thursday vs Boyd County and had a good outing shutting out the Lions. The ladies bats exploded as they hammered out 12 hits with Spurlock and Erin Lowry each having multiple hits. Brittney Napier tripled as well. The team batting average of .342 speaks well for things to come and the pitching staff has an outstanding era of .44 runs per game. the Highlander staff has struck out 57 batters 48 innings while only walking 18. All the girls are looking forward to Fridays game vs Cabell Midland @ HHS.
