News and Announcements

Well thank you gents for contributing to an excellent Sunday.  Started off with a few hours of poker (ongoing from Saturday night), BSing and beers with college friends.  A FINE soccer game, another hour and a half of BS and Beer with friends, go home and watch the Pats win, which of course meant more B&B...

So, on to the game report.

The theme to our scheme is clog the middle and run the fast break away.  We did just that, controlling the field well and when Derek put the ball through for Jimmy he was off to the races for the first goal.  Derry came back quickly with a cross from the wing to a very nice header that went off the crossbar and in.  This has always been the weak point in our defense, with the combined vertical leap of the defense being less than a foot, we don't do well with the air ball (to be fair, when Rick plays on D the average leap goes up by 6 inches, but then again, the average height reached goes down (<: ).  We saw a little more team effort on the next two goals, a cross by Jeff to Jimmy for the finish and a nice cross by German that dropped right in front of the goal, hit a defender, maybe brushed Steve M's jersey, hit another defender and went in.  The last goal of the first half was another through ball for Jimmy, who stopped at the top of the box, waited for the keeper to make a move towards him, then lofted is up and over him for a beautifully executed chip shot.  The D stayed solid and the middies owned the middle so it was rare that Derry had any threat on Joe.

For the second half we had the Jeff Guild show.  He took a nice run in for the first goal, sorry if I forget who fed him that one, but they were starting to blur together by then.  Next he lofted a well placed corner to John V. at the top of the box, who hit it with a textbook left footed volley into the upper right corner of the goal.   A clear winner for best shot of the season so far.   Then a solo breakaway for Jeff, slowing just long enough for the keeper to swear at him before he put it past him, then a final shot through several defenders and into the left edge of the net after some guy in black shorts (yes Mo, you), made a nice pass back across the middle after being contained by the end line on the right side of the goal.

All in all, a very good performance, solid domination, good passing, nice finishing.  That side, time for a brief reality check.  This was the second of the two teams that came up from division 6 last season and can reasonably be assumed to be the weakest team in the division.  Good teams dominate poor teams and we did that, but don't expect them all to be this easy.  When we run into a team with some speedy defenders who can keep up with Jeff and Jimmy, or just a well disciplined defense, we are going to need to work the ball into the goal.  We showed some good work on that a couple of times, and passed well at the end when we were just running out the clock.  If we keep our heads in the game as well as we have so far, there's no reason we shouldn't be back up in Division 4 for the spring.

When you put 8 goals in the net, there is not much I can say except, EXCELLENT WORK BOYS !!!!
Godfather

Nice to start the season with a win!  Good to see most of the old faces back, and welcome to the new ones.

Gazing into my crystal ball from the wild of NH here's what I hear about the game.

First, major props to Joe for stepping up to play goal this year, and for doing his usual excellent job, especially his Zoltan Mesko impersonation.

Second, good to see a solid defense in play.  Keep the other team away from the goal and the chances will come.  Good hustle coming back from the mids helps as well.  It's a good formula, let's stick with it.

Of course we'll hope to see more offensive power as we go on, but good to hear that Jim's still got that break away speed, and there were a number of opportunities we missed last year because no one was following on, so kudos to Mo for being there for the finish.  Let's give Jim a few more chances for glory, be good to see his goal total exceed his card total (<:.

Good start boys, but it's just a starting point.  Keep up the hustle, work on the transitions and let's make this a season of getting better every game.

GM NOTE:    Much better boys.   Lets keep up the intensity and get back into D4 for the Spring...  We have to Win one game at a time and we can't make stupid mistakes to cost us a game.   Every game counts so SHOW UP TO PLAY !!

 Godfather

What's there to say about a season that disappointed like this one?  We went out and scored five goals.  It should have been enough, but wasn't and we got another tie.  Joe provided his usual outstanding effort in goal along with some offensive help.  The first goal was long punt by Joe to Herman's head, well placed from there to Scott who pushed it through for Jimmy to finish.  The second was a great solo effort by Jeff G, coming down the right wing, then curling in along the baseline and beating the goalie.  Number three was a hard low spinning corner by Jimmy, the keeper tried to clear it with his foot but the spin was enough to send it in.  Number four was a one on one, Mo and the goalie, Mo won.  Number five was another great punt by Joe, defender went to collect it but strong pressure by Jeff meant he didn't have time to collect it and he tried to head it back to the keeper.  Instead it went over him and Jeff tapped it in.

Their final goal seemed to typify the season.  One of their forwards collected the ball near midfield.  Dave went to contain him and their player pushed it to the side to try and go by.  Dave blocked it, but it bounced right back to the forward's feet and he collected it.  Jimmy had moved into position by then and was there to block and had his foot on the ball, but lost his footing and went down.   As the forward took the shot, John V moved to block it and managed to deflect the shot.  Of course that was just enough to deflect it past Joe who was positioning for the original shot.

Injuries and lack of bodies were our major downfall this season.  Get in shape this summer.  Try your best to make as many games as you can.  And if you know a good goal keeper, call him up so Joe and Steve can get back to where they'd like to play.  They both gave great efforts this season, but they shouldn't have to.

Many thanks to our number 1 fan Michele for the great support all season and organizing the cookout after the last game.

Well, that sucked!

As is normal at this point, we were short on players and long on injuries, but we were there and ready to go.  Jim joined us to cover net for which he deserves many thanks.  Mo showed up, limp and all to provide us with our one sub.

We started out a little slow and Jim was a bit rusty, which showed as the first goal came from Westford, rolling just inside the post when it at first appeared it was going wide.  We came back quickly though and Jimmy fed Steve in the box where Steve applied his famous toe, scooping the ball up and over the keeper and it was 1-1.  They came back again fairly quickly for a 2-1 lead, then Jimmy played a little billiards in the box, slamming it off a defender's back and again, up and over the keeper to tie it up.

The third goal was pretty, Dave and Jeff worked it down the left side, Jeff hit a high cross over which we couldn't quite get a header on, but Stuart quickly rounded it up, turned it outside, then crossed it back in front where Herman went up for a nice header and a 3-2 lead and that's how we went into the half.

A bit of back and forth in the beginning of the second half with nothing much happening, then the ref decided to take a hand, because, why should the players decide the game?  Westford took a ball deep down their left side, very deep as it went out over the end line around the edge of the box.   It was obvious enough that players on both teams pulled up, but the ref didn't blow the whistle and the Westford player turned and lobbed it back into the box.  There it bounced around a little then Dave chested it down and cleared it out.  Being Dave myself, that ball hit me square in the middle of my chest, my arms out to the side and nowhere near it.  But the ref called it a hand ball and awarded a penalty kick.  Tie game.  Not satisfied with that, 5 minutes later the ref again blew the whistle in the box after Jim went down to grab a loose ball.  No one on either team had a clue what the call was, but the ref then explained that Jim had first grabbed the Westford player's ankle, then played the ball.  One would think the player would know if his ankle had been grabbed, but this was the ref's day to shine.  Another penalty kick and 4-3 Westford.

More than a little upset by this point we came back strong.  Deep on the left side, Jimmy threw into Jeff, took a few steps and received the ball back.  Then a give to Dave and a go to the end line for another pass back, juked a defender along the end line and then a nice roller six feet out to Mo standing in front of the net for the easy goal and we were tied once again.

This time there was a case to be made for a foul, although I'd say it was more Joe's kick after the play than the one he called on Jim, but there we were, penalty kick number 3 and Westford back on top.  By the end of that we'd racked up 4 yellow cards,  most for opining on the ref's performance and started to lose our focus.  Only a minute later and a high ball dropped over where John and their forward were contending for it, giving them a one on one with Jim which they converted and it was 6-4.  The final goal was a bit of rustiness coming back again, Jim caught a spinning ball, but it spun out of his hands, hit the ground and had enough spin left to take it into the goal for 7-4.  The score says 8-4, but I don't remember the eighth one, as I said, by then we'd kind of lost focus.

As crappy as the game was, we are still one point ahead of Westford.  Depending on what happened in Pepperell/Harvard we are tied with Pepperell.  We now need to do our damnedest to win out.  We've got Hoptkinton next week which is going to be a tough game, then we finish with Burlington which we certainly can win.

Next week is also our last home game.  Anyone got a grill they can bring?  I don't have one, but I'll start the signup and bring some sausages.  Anyone in for a last home game cookout?

Another disappointment, but not a bad effort given the state of the team.  Ten minutes into the first half they got the first lucky break.  Their striker came across the front of the goal had a decent one on one shot, but Dave managed to cut in front and blocked the shot with his heel.  The ball popped up, hit the striker in the thigh and dropped right at his feet giving him an easy second chance.  Joe made a nice dive but the ball just made it under and in.

At half time Scot had to leave and that left us with no subs.  Brother John was limping around with a acre of ace bandages holding him together and Jeff D. was suffering from dehydration.  At least 7 players had significant injuries and by the end of the we had Jimmy (groin) and Derek (thigh) playing fullback and anybody who could put together a run going forward when they could.  Despite all that we were actually dominating the time of possession and keeping the ball in their end.  However, they nailed us on two break aways, lobs over the line and since they could still run they were able to convert the one on one's against the keeper.  We didn't quit though, which says a lot, and driving hard from his new position as strong stopper, Derek hit a hard corkscrewing shot from above the box.   The keep was able to block it, but not control it and Herman was there to tap it in to make it 3-1.  As the game neared the end, Herman popped a ball up to Dave in the midst of several Harvard players.  Dave took the first bounce at gut level, the second at knee height, the hit a shot at the right post from just outside the box.  The goalie made a nice dive and got a hand on it, but couldn't keep it out of the net.

Third half was a clear victory, and eventually moved on to Jeff's to avoid the parade and help with the Jayfest leftovers.

Unfortunately, with only 30 seconds left, Harvard was able to run out the clock and get the win, 3-2.  Three games to go and we need everyone there.   This team is being held together by guts, ace bandages, ibuprofen and beer.  But we're still in every game and have some good wins left in us!
