#16 Flanagan Beats #2 Monsignor Pace 3-1

Posted by Joe Chacko at Apr 6, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Baseball Americas' #16 team in the Country, Flanagan Falcons (16-2), beat the #2 team in the Country, Monsignor Pace (16-2), 3-1 this afternoon behind a masterful pitching performance by Senior Ace Righthander Glenn Witkowski. Witkowski(8-0) pitched 6 innings allowing 1 run on 6 hits and struck out 3 in route to his 24th consecutive win(school record) and improve his career record to 28-2 also a school record for wins. Junior lefthander D.J. Swatscheno came in relief in the 7th inning and quickly struck out the first 2 batters he faced. After a 7 pitch walk to Spartans top hitter, SS Adrian Cardenas coach Evans turned to Senior Closer Steve Thorsland to shut the door. Thorsland did just that as he got highly touted 3rd baseman Chris Marrero to strike out on 4 pitches, the last being a fastball that dove down and in to the righthander. Junior catcher Nick Navarro drove in the winning run with an RBI basehit to rightfield scoring Rolando Gomez in the 6th inning that broke a 1-1 tie. Flanagan jumped out on top 1-0 in the bottom of the 1st inning when Junior SS Luis Penate doubled and scored on a throwing error by Marrero. Pace tied the game in the 5th inning on 3 consecutive base hits before the Falcons went up for good in the bottom of the 6th inning. Flanagan will travel to Las Vegas, Nevada on Tuesday to play in the Southern Nevada Easter Baseball Classic over Spring Break.

Sarasota upends Falcons

After a delay getting to Florida Atlantic University for their showdown with Sarasota the Falcons offense never showed up. Flanagan(11-2-1) lost to the #6 team in the State 3-1. Sarasota(9-3) took an early 2-0 on a 2 run home run by 3rd baseman Joey Terdoslavich in the 1st inning and then added a solo shot by 1st baseman Evan Stobbs in the 4th inning in route to the win. D.J. Swatscheno pitched a complete game 5 hitter, striking out 10 but took the loss as the offense only mustered 2 hits and 1 run off of Troy Graybill. Flanagan will try and rebound from the loss as they host Miramar on Monday in the District 12-6A game at 3:45.
