JV Wins / Varsity gets Waxed

Posted by Joe Chacko at Mar 11, 2007 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The Flanagan Falcons played a day/night, JV/Varsity doubleheader with Douglas today. The JV would pull out a tight 1-0 win while the Varsity was embarrassed 13-1. The JV Falcons improved to 9-1 on the season behind the strong pitching of Sophomore lefthanders Mark Peterson and Diego Delgado. The 2 southpaws combined on the shutout. Peterson went 5 innings allowing just 1 hit and striking out 5 to earn the win while Delgado pitched the final 2 innings without allowing a hit and striking out 5 of the 6 batters he faced, earning the save. Diego would provide the winning run as well with an RBI basehit in the 1st inning scoring Tyler Palmer. That's all the offense the pitchers would need for the win. The Varsity game quickly turned into a blowout as the Douglas Eagles pounded out 18 hits including 4 home runs to crush the Falcons at home 13-1. Flanagan had no answers for the Eagles Anthony Rizzo who pitched 5 strong innings. Douglas built a 10-0 lead before the Falcons could muster a run in the 6th inning on an RBI double by Chris Connelly that scored Rolando Gomez. Flanagan travels to Everglades tomorrow for a District 12 matchup. The game is set for 3:45. Records: Douglas(7-3) Flanagan(7-3)

Fondon Shuts Out Titans

Posted by Joe Chacko at Mar 8, 2007 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Flanagan ace RJ Fondon did something that has not happened in a few months, that's beat the mighty Nova Titans. He also did something that hasn't happened in four years, and that's shut out the Titans at Pat McQuaid Field. Fondon pitched a complete game, 4 hit shutout with 7 stikeouts on the night. "It was a huge performance by RJ on the hill" said Coach Evans. Nova made one threat to score the entire night, in the 3rd inning of a scoreless game the Titans Ben Scheffer tried to score from 2nd base on a single to right field. Flanagan's Joel Carranza made an accurate throw to the plate which bounced in the thick infield grass and up the line a bit, that's when catcher Nick Navarro scooped the ball as Scheffer tried to leap around him. Navarro and Scheffer would fall to the ground with Nick holding onto the ball making the out at the plate. The Falcons would answer the scoring opportunity in the top of the 4th as DJ Swatscheno singled with 2 outs, stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch. He would score the games 1st run when Mitch Massard's chopper to shortstop was mishandled and thrown away at 1st base. The Falcons added an insurance run in the 7th when Massard was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Pinch runner Zach Jackson would advance to 2nd on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by TJ Foard. Zach went to 3rd on a pickoff attempt that hit him and rolled out into leftfield. Jesse Mesa would deliver in the clutch as he laced a double to rightcenter scoring Zach. Flanagan plays at home Monday night against Stoneman-Douglas. Game time is set for 6:30pm. Records: Flanagan(7-2) Nova(8-1)

Golden Hawks Hold off Falcons late Comeback

Posted by Joe Chacko at Mar 2, 2007 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
After digging an 8-0 hole the Falcons clawed their way back into a game they had no business having a chance to win. Unfortunately they fell 1 run short losing to Miami Springs 13-12. The night was filled with fireworks as both teams combined for 9 home runs. Springs' catcher Yasmani Grandal blasted 3 HR's with 6 RBI to pace the Hawks offense. Trailing 8-0 the Falcons started the comeback in the 4th inning as Chris Connelly doubled in 2 runs. In the 5th inning Jesse Mesa led off with a solo shot to CF and after a walk to Rolando Gomez, Luis Penate would launch his 2nd HR of the season. Then with 2 outs Chris Connelly blasted a solo shot to LF cutting the Springs lead to 8-6. The Hawks would answer in the top of the 6th inning when Grandal hit his 3rd HR this time from the right side making the score 10-6. In the 7th inning Miami Springs(6-3) extended the lead to 13-6 on a 3 run HR by CF Bermudez. Flanagan(5-2) would not go away quietly, the Falcons chipped away at the 7 run lead scoring 6 runs on an RBI hit by Connelly, 2 run double by Mitch Massard, 2 run HR from D.J. Swatscheno and a solo HR from Mesa. That would be as close as the Falcons would get finishing the game with 12 runs on 12 hits. Flanagan will be back in action next Wednesday when they travel to Miramar for a District game vs. the Patriots.
