Falcons Stay Perfect

Posted by Ray Evans at Mar 8, 2014 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Falcons (8-0) downed the West Broward Bobcats 12-2 in 6 innings to stay undefeated and gain control of the top spot in the District.

The Falcons offense got going in the top of the 3rd inning when Oscar "Bui" Rodriguez hit the first of his 2 homeruns on the day over the left centerfield 370 ft. sign to take a 3-0 lead.  Rodriguez would finish the day 3-3 with 2 homeruns, 4 RBI's and 3 runs scored.

In the top of the 5th inning and the score 3-2, Miguel Presno led off with a double. Andres Rios put down a sacrifice bunt to move Presno to third, but on the play the Bobcats 3rd baseman made a throwing error that allowed Presno to score making it 4-2 and put Rios at 2nd. Luis Barranco, who went 3-3 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored on the day, then laid down another sacrifice bunt to move Rios to 3rd base.  After Rodriguez reached base by a HBP, Ryan Dodge stepped up and belted a 3 run homerun to make the score 7-2. Before the dust could settle, Eric Rivera stepped up and went back to back to make the score 8-2 and seemingly put the game out of reach.

In the top of the 6th inning the Falcons would cross the plate 4 more times to make the score 12-2, courtesy of 2 BB's, Barranco's 3rd hit of the day that drove in 2 runs and Rodriguez's 2nd homerun of the day that drove in 2 more. That concluded the offensive show for the Falcons.

Gentry Fortuno (3-0) took the hill and pitched a complete game to earn his 3rd win of the season and bring his high school career record to 20-0.  Fortuno gave up 2 earned runs on 5 hits while striking out 5 and walking 1.

The Falcons (8-0, 4-0) will host Jupiter HS from Palm Beach on Friday, March 14th at 6:30 pm.  This game is a rematch of last years Regional Final game in which Jupiter beat Flanagan and ruined their hopes of returning to the State Final Four.

7th inning Comeback Win for the Falcons

Posted by Ray Evans at Feb 21, 2014 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Falcons had an exciting 7th inning comeback road victory against the Columbus Explorers on Thursday night.  Down 1-0, the Falcons scored 3 runs in the top of the 7th and then held on to get the 3-1 win in front of a shocked Columbus crowd.

On this night, where the pitching was so outstanding, the game finished just under 2 hours.  Gentry Fortuno (2-0) threw his second complete game for the Falcons. Fortuno gave up 1 earned run on 5 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 2. Anthony Martinez threw 5 1/3 innings for the Explorers without giving up a run and received a no decision. He was relieved by Ramon Quintero, who would eventually get the loss.

The Falcons did their damage in the top of the 7th when Kevin Mora led off the inning with a base hit.  David Sarmiento followed with a perfectly placed bunt for a hit. Miguel Presno then came up and followed suit with another perfectly placed bunt for another infield hit. The catcher decided to try and make a play on Presno at 1st and made an ill advised throw that sailed down the right field line which scored pinch runner Alex Sarmiento to tie the game, 1-1. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and no outs, the top of the line up came around. Leadoff hitter Andres Rios drove a ball into left center for an RBI sacrifice fly that the centerfielder ended up not being able to handle. With no outs and Presno at 3rd and Rios at 2nd, Luis Barranco drove the first pitch he saw into the same spot for an RBI Sac fly. This time the centerfielder was able to hold on to it and Presno tagged up to score to make the score 3-1. No other damage was done and that was all of the offense needed for Fortuno on the evening.

Miguel Presno led the offense going 2-3 with 1 run scored. Andres Rios, Ryan Dodge, Kevin Mora and David Sarmiento all had one hit a piece with Rios and Barranco each getting 1 RBI on the night.

The Falcons (5-0) will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 28th at 6:30pm when they go on the road to take on the McArthur Mustangs in a District matchup.
