Falcons Outlast Panthers

Posted by Ray Evans at Apr 13, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Falcons held on for a 13-12 victory against visiting Dr. Phillips from Orlando.

On this night where balls were flying out of the ball park the Falcons happened to be the last man standing at the end of the game. The Falcons haven't given up that many runs to an opponent since 2010.

The bats got it going right away in the bottom of the 1st inning getting 4 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. The Panthers bounced back and got 2 in the top of the 2nd and 1 in the top of the 3rd off starter Kharlin Sued to narrow the lead to 4-3. It stayed that way until the bottom of the 3rd inning when the Falcons exploded for 7 runs on 6 hits and three walks. The big blow, a 3 run HR to centerfield, coming off Ryan Dodge's bat to knock out the starting pitcher with the score at 12-3.

Dr. Phillips decided to make it a game and got 2 runs in the 4th, and 4 more in the 5th to make the score 12-9 going into the bottom of the 5th inning. Eric Rivera stepped up to bat and hit a solo HR to make the score 13-9.  In the top of the 6th the Panthers answered with one and the score was 13-10. In the top of the 7th, the Panthers brought a pinch hitter to the plate with 1 out and a runner on 1st base. He hit a 2 run HR to bring the score to 13-12. The Falcons were able to get the next 2 outs to preserve the 13-12 victory against a very stubborn Dr. Phillips team.

The pitchers had a rough night on the hill against the Panthers. Sued got the start and was only able to go 3 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 4 hits while striking out 2. Alex Sarmiento came into the game to relieve Sued at the start of the 4th inning. The Falcons seemingly had the game under control with the score 12-3, but Sarmiento could not hold the Panthers offense down and got knocked out of the game after giving up 5 earned runs on 5 hits after only 1 inning. In comes Freshman Jeremy Cook into a pressure situation with the score 13-9. He seemed to be the only pitcher that controlled the Panthers bats. He gave up 1 hit and did not give up an earned run while striking out 4 in 1.2 innings to earn his first Varsity win. Chris "C-Rod" Rodriguez came in to shut the door, but ran into a little trouble in the 7th. C-Rod gave up his first runs of the season on a 2 run HR before closing out the inning and holding on to the 13-12 victory and getting his 4th save of the season.

The Falcons (18-1, 8-0) will take on the Nations #1 team in Archbishop McCarthy at home on Saturday at 7pm in the HSBN Game of the Week.

Falcons Blank Bobcats

Posted by Ray Evans at Apr 8, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Falcons concluded their District schedule with a 6-0 win over the West Broward Bobcats to go 8-0 in District competition.

Chris Rodriguez got the start for the Falcons and pitched 4.2 innings of shutout baseball to get the win and bring his record to 2-0 with 3 saves. Chris, better known as C Rod, only gave up 3 hits while striking out 7. C Rod has not given up a run on the season as of yet. Gentry Fortuno came into the game in the top of the 5th with 2 outs and men on 1st and 2nd. Fortuno balked moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd before getting the leadoff hitter to pop up to 1st baseman, Ryan Dodge. Fortuno stayed in to close out the game and picked up the save. He gave up 2 hits while striking out 3 in 2.1 innings.

The offense was quiet until the bottom of the 3rd when David Sarmiento led the inning off with a HBP. Sarmiento was able to move to 3rd when the pitcher had an errant pick off throw to 1st. With 1 out Andres Rios drew his 2nd walk of the evening and stole 2nd base. With runners at 2nd and 3rd, Luis Barranco hit a line drive that looked like it would find the gap but the Bobcat centerfielder made a diving catch for the second out of the inning. Sarmiento tagged on the play to score the 1st run of the game. With Rios still at 2nd, Oscar "Bui" Rodriguez singled up the middle. Rios was thrown out at the plate trying to score by the centerfielder to keep the score at 1-0.

Ryan Dodge led off the bottom of the 4th inning with a long solo homerun that was hit into the wind to centerfield to make the score to 2-0. Dodge did some more damage in the bottom of the 5th when he came up with 2 outs and bases loaded. The Bobcat outfield had a shift to left field on and Dodge was able to hit the ball hard to right field. The outfielder made a great attempt on the ball and just missed making a great play. The ball went off his mitt and roled to the fence clearing the bases bringing the score to 5-0. Dodge was able to make it to 3rd base and eventually scored on a balk by the Bobcat pitcher to make the score 6-0 which concluded the scoring on the night for the Falcons.

The Falcons (17-1, 8-0) will take on Dr. Phillips from Orlando at Falcon Field on Friday night at 6:30pm.

Falcons Cruise by Mustangs

Posted by Ray Evans at Apr 1, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Falcons stayed perfect in District play with a 7-0 win over the McArthur Mustangs at home last night.

Zach Finch got his first start of the season and made it a memorable one. Finch limited the Mustangs to 3 hits while pitching a  complete game shutout.  Finch was in complete control the entire night as the Mustangs only had 5 baserunners all game.

On the offensive side most of the damage was done in the 1st inning as the Falcons scored 5 runs on 4 hits and 2 HBP. Andres Rios led off with a HBP. Luis Barranco followed that up with a single up the middle. After a passed ball moved baserunners to 2nd and 3rd, Ryan Dodge doubled to left for 2 RBI's. Eric Rivera came to bat next and took 1st base on a HBP. After another passed ball and runners at 2nd and 3rd, Mark Vientos drove in 2 runs with a double to right center to make the score 4-0. Dakota Doyle made his debut and singled to left field to drive in Vientos to bring the score to 5-0.

Rivera led the 3rd inning off with a double. Vientos drove a ball to deep center to move Rivera to 3rd base with one out.  Doyle came up and added an RBI infield single to his day. David Vazquez was next up and hit an RBI double to deep left field to score Doyle to make the score 7-0. That was it for the Falcons offense on the evening.

The Falcons (15-1, 6-0) will take to the road to play the Miramar Patriots on Friday night at 6:30pm.
