FAQ 2018

WSA Frequently Asked Questions

General Information:

1.     WSA supports players ages 4-18.

2.    WSA has CO-Ed in-house recreational teams covering the entire range.

3.    WSA has travel teams supporting ages 7-17 based on player and coach interest.

4.    Player birth year is used to determine which league they play in. The ‘u’ in the u10 designation stands for UNDER 10 as of the end of the year. The birth year-to-age group designations can be found here.

5.    Players can ‘PLAY UP’ if the player and parent wish to do so.  This means, for instance, if a player has a birthyear that places the player in U10, but may wish to play with u12 because of talent level or school friends. This conforms with MSYSA rules (Maryland State Youth Soccer Association)

6.    Players may NOT play DOWN. You may not play in U8 for example, if your birth year places you in U10.

Westminster Soccer Academy (Ages 4 -7)

1.     What leagues are in the Academy?

Answer: In the Academy, the groups are single age u5, u6, u7, u8.  All leagues are based on birth year, with the exception of u5 which will be only those who are 4 as of July 31.  For example, in the 2017 season, if your child has a 2010 birth year they would play in U8. Click here to see the birth year to league matrix.

2.    How are teams formed?

Answer: The age group coordinator form the teams in the Academy dividing the registrants into teams balancing number of girls/boys across teams.  You will not find out what team your child is on, or practice night until AFTER registration closes.  You should expect to hear the first week in August from your child's coach.

3.    Can I request a coach or to play with a friend?

Answer: In the Academy the answer is YES and every effort is made to accommodate these requests.

4.    What is included in the registration fee?

Answer: Registration includes a uniform (jersey, shorts, socks) and a trophy at season end.

5.    What other equipment do I need for my child?

Answer: Shin guards are required.  Appropriate shoes are also required; cleats are optional.

6.    Do I NEED to supply a ball?

Answer: While it is a good idea to have a soccer ball at home for your player, coaches will have balls for practices and matches so you are NOT required to bring one. (side note – Five Below is a great place to get a fine inexpensive soccer ball)

7.    What if I want to coach?

Answer: PLEASE sign up.  WSA has plenty of folks to help you out and has coach training sessions and professional trainers working at every level.

8.    When are practices?

Answer: Academy teams typically practices only one evening a week.  Typical practice start time is 6:00 and last about an hour. Practices will start in early August and continue until it gets too dark too early typically (coach call).  Practices typically begin the second or third week in August.

9.    How long are practices?

Answer: this is dependent on the coach, but at these ages, typically about an hour.

10. When are matches?

Answer: All matches are on Saturday mornings. Matches will start in Setpember 1 (Labor Day weekend) and run through most of October.

11.  How long are matches?

Answer: Matches are divided into 4 quarters at the Academy level.  The length of the quarter increases as the age increases (see Academy manual), but in general the match time including breaks etc is under 1 hour.

12. Where are practices/matches?

Answer: ALL practices and matches are held at Friendship Valley Elementary School.

In-House Rec League (Ages 7 1/2-14)

1.     What leagues are in In-House?

Answer: The age groups are u10 (7 1/2, 8&9 years old), u12 (9 1/2-11 years old), and u15 or 7th/8th (12-14 years old).  The age groups are based on birth year.  Click here to see the birth year to league matrix.  For the 2017 season this is birth years 2003 (plus 8th graders)-2009.

2.    How are teams formed?

Answer: The teams are formed via a draft.  The coaches get the information on all registered players including grade, age, gender, and years of experience.  During the draft, players are drafted by age/gender, so for instance in u10, all 9 year old boys will be drafted, then all 9 year old girls, then repeat for 8 year old boys/girls.  This is to ensure an even distribution of age/gender across teams.

3.    Can I request a coach or to play with a friend?

Answer: In the In-House leagues the answer is NO. WSA found no way to ensure that these requests were not being abused to create powerhouse teams.

4.    What is included in the registration fee?

Answer: Registration includes a uniform (jersey, shorts, socks) and a trophy at season end.

5.    What other equipment do I need for my child?

Answer: Shin guards and cleats are required at these ages.

Answer: Teams typically practice two evenings a week.  Some coaches will drop to a single practice a week a few weeks after school starts.  Typical practice start time is 6:00. Practices will start in early August and continue until it gets too dark too early typically (coach call)

9.    How long are practices?

Answer: this is dependent on the coach, but at these ages, typically about 1.5 hours. Practices may get shorter as the days get shorter.

10. When are matches?

Answer: Most matches are Saturday mornings. In u12 and u15 there are occasional matches in the evenings under lights in Taneytown or Winfield. Typically each team has only one of these per season. Matches will start in early September (Labor Day Weekend) and run through most of October.

11.  How long are matches?

Answer: Matches are divided into 2 halves. The length of the half increases as the age increases from about 20 minutes/half to 30 minutes/half.

12. Where are practices/matches?

Answer: ALL practices are at Friendship Valley Elementary School and almost all matches are held at Friendship Valley Elementary School (u12 and u15 teams likely have one, maybe two matches at either Taneytown or Winfield).

Travel Leagues (Ages 8-16)

1.     What ages are supported by WSA travel teams?

Answer: The age groups are u8 through u17.  Travel leagues are single gender so there is a B U12 and a G U12. It is the desire of WSA to have a team for each gender at each age and this is dependent solely upon having enough player interest and having parents willing to coach.

2.    How are teams formed?

Answer: The teams are formed via a tryout.  The team coaches hold tryouts in late May/early June where prospective players come out to a ‘practice’ where they demonstrate their capabilities.  Coaches then decide who makes the team based on capabilities. WSA is willing to support multiple teams in a single age group again depending on player/coach interest.

3.    Is travel more expensive?

Answer: Yes, travel is more expensive.  In addition to the regular WSA registration fee, there are additional travel costs.  These costs typically bring the total standard costs to between $230-$260 per player.

4.    What is included in the registration fee?

Answer: Registration includes a uniform package (jersey – home/away, shorts, socks), referee fees, and two tournaments.

5.    What other equipment do I need for my child?

Answer: Shin guards and cleats are required.

Answer: Teams typically practice two to three evenings a week.  Typical practice start time is 6:00. Practices will start in July and continue until it gets too dark too early typically (coach call).

9.    How long are practices?

Answer: this is dependent on the coach, typically about 1.5 hours. Practices may get shorter as the days get shorter.

10. When are matches?

Answer: Matches will start in early September and run through most of October.

11.  How long are matches?

Answer: Matches are divided into 2 halves. The length of the half increases as the age increases from about 20 minutes/half to 45 minutes/half.

12. Where are practices/matches?

Answer: ALL practices are at Friendship Valley Elementary School, East Middle School, or the Gateway School. WSA home fields are Friendship Valley Elementary and East Middle School.  Away games can be as far as about an hour away, perhaps a little more.
