Bereavement Notice re Dr. Will Weber

Posted by Carolyn Stone at Jun 27, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Dear NLL Player Families ~

It is with the heaviest of hearts that I apprise you that our Neartown Little League President, Dr. Will Weber, passed away suddenly last night. Besides being one of the premiere educators at the University of Houston College of Education, Dr. Weber has been the absolute backbone of our Little League organization over the years -- literally building it from a small group of 40 players to the roster of 200+ that we have registered today and coordinating the construction of beautiful Hilton Field.  He was also a stalwart supporter and active member of several other community organizations, including one of our key sponsors, the River Oaks Rotary Club.  Despite all of the hours he devoted to his work and volunteer efforts, he always found time to spend with his family.  His wife, Cheryl, son Brad, daughter-in-law Jennifer, and his grandchildren, were of utmost importance to him.  He touched the lives of so many of us and will be sorely missed by all.

Funeral information is pending at the present time.  As soon as I know the arrangements, I will pass them on to you.  Please note that the 11-12 year old tournament team game that is scheduled this evening at 7PM at Hilton Field will be played.

On behalf of all of us with NLL, we extend our sincerest condolences, thoughts and prayers to all members of the Weber family.

Eric Hilton Little League Field

Posted by Carolyn Stone at Apr 21, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

It was a beauty of an afternoon, despite the Houston blazing sun.  The Eric Hilton Little League Field Dedication event held on Saturday afternoon, April 22, 2006, proved to be an extra special, heart-warming occasion for all in attendance.  From the surprise appearance by Astros Manager, Phil Garner (who managed a steady stream of autograph requests); effecting comments and United States Congressional Proclamation announcement by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee; Naming of the Field and special Eric Hilton award presentations by Stephen Keener, President and CEO of Little League International; to the Blessing of the Field by Rev. Drew Garner (including a story regarding God's creation of baseball..."In the Beeg Inning"...we won't soon forget)--it was truly quite an afternoon.  Through it all, honoree Eric Hilton was a dignified, attentive, and visually proud recipient of the many outpourings of appreciation.  The most memorable highlight of all, however, was Mr. Hilton's reading of NLL Reds player, Larkin Purkaysatha's, poignant thank-you letter, which choked up not only Mr. Hilton but many of us in the crowd as well.  From all of us at NLL, our baseball caps are off to you, Mr. Hilton, for your wonderful underwriting support.  We would be remiss not to also recognize and underscore the achievements of Dr. Will Weber, Neartown LL President, whose dedication and tireless work over the past several years made the Eric Hilton Little League Field a reality.  And our indebted thanks to Little League International, the Houston City Parks Department, HISD--especially Principal Monica Sandoval and Wharton Elementary School, Mrs. Joe (Maxine) Myers, and The Rotary Club of River Oaks--for their donations as well.  We are very proud of our new, spectacular Eric Hilton Little League Field and promise to maintain it for years to come.

Opening Day at Eric Hilton Field and the future of that field in light of the planned closing of Wharton Elementary School were the focus of an informative article in the March 6 issue of the River Oaks Examiner.   Those wishing to read the article can find it at the following link:
