Fall River's Finest head to the courts

FALL RIVER -- The Fall River Community Tennis Association's junior advanced teams will face opposition from the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Wednesday afternoon in USTA Rhode Island/SEMass Jr. Team Tennis League matches. The Fall River CTA's 18&Under Advanced Team will host the Hall of Fame at 1 p.m. at Durfee, while the 14&Under Advanced squad travels to Newport to meet the defending state and New England champions.
Fall River's 18 Advanced Team, 1-2 on the season, is coached by Peter Holt. To start the summer league season, they split a pair of 3-2 decisions with South Kingstown, RI, the defending USTA RI/SEMass. league state champions. They also dropped a 3-2 road contest to the South County CTA of Wakefield, RI. Both opponents draw boys players from South Kingstown High School, the 11-time defending Rhode Island Division 1 state champions.
Fall River's 3-2 win over South Kingstown came in their only previous home match. The victories came from Daniela Roman of Somerset at girls singles, Courtney Langfield and Ali Vautrin of Somerset in girls doubles, both in straight sets, and the mixed doubles team of Kristin Bertsch of Middletown, RI and Jackson Reilly of Swansea and LaSalle Academy, who clinched the match in a super-tie breaker with scores of 2-6, 6-5 (5-3), 10-6.
The Fall River 18s also include John Charest, Ben Holt, Chris Ross and Kyle Camara from Somerset, along with Rachel Le of Berkley. Projected No. 1 player Matt Dunne of Somerset and Tabor Academy is expected to make his season debut.
The Fall River CTA's 14&Under Advanced Team is coached by Salem State standout and former Durfee all-star Megan Cote. They are 1-1 on the season, with a victory over the Conanicut Yacht Club of Jamestown, RI and loss to South County CTA. Fall River's 14 team has included Sonia Rodrigues, Dayna Jackson and Conrad Calcagno of Swansea, Bojanna Roman of Somerset, Nick Rosa of Westport, Lauren Bertsch of Middletown plus Corey Toupin, Andrew Dunne and Carolyn Dunne of Fall River.
The Fall River CTA is also fielding teams in the USTA SEMass. Intermediate League in the 14 and 18 & Under divisions. For additional information go to www.frcta.com.
Both advanced teams will also be in action on Friday. The 14s will host Fore Court of Cumberland, RI at 1 p.m. at Durfee, while the 18s travel to Cumberland to face Fore Court.
