Falcons perfect in execution of "Team" play in stunning Mavericks
The Falcons put together a perfect game last night stunning the Mavericks in an 11-5 victory in front of a record crowd. From the opening face off it was clear the Falcons came to play even though the Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first quarter.
The tone of the game was set early when Freshman Goalie Bryce Cady stunned a lone Maverick Attackman with a foot save. From that point on Cady (#32) put up a veteran fight saving 12 of 17 shots on cage.
In the minutes that followed the entire Falcons team put on an impressive show of team play. The defense worked as a unit to restrict the Mavericks to only 17 shots on cage and to hold their opponents to only 3 goals through three (3) quarters. At the end of three quarters the score was 8-3 Falcons.
And the offensive unit put on a display of ball control and team scoring that would make any coach cry with joy. From the field the Falcons offensive unit was 11 of 27 shots spreading the scoring around with 7 players scoring and 7 assisted goals.
Senior captain and inspirational leader of the game, John Wilson put up one goal and two assists as well as setting a blistering pace for his teammates to follow.
The game was a physical contest with neither team wanting to concede early as the penalty box saw plenty of action. The game had a record high 13 penalties (6 Torrey Pines, 7 La Costa Canyon) as the officials strived to keep the play safe.
Scoring for the Falcons: John Wilson (1g, 2a), Andrew Perkins (3g), Sean Doyle (2g, 2a), Lucas Gradinger (1g, 3a), Spencer Brewster (1g) and Bennett Shafer (1g)
